I heard a rumour that DSTV would be phasing out the standard decoders at the end of this year, does anyone know if this is true?
The reason I'm a concerned about this is our townhouse complex has six blocks of units, each block with it's own dish and cabling that is run to each unit. These six dishes have a six way LNB on each one. If the standard decoder gets phased out and only the HD or PVR decoder is available our whole complex will be screwed as far as DSTV reception goes because I believe the new decoders require two coax cables and a duel LNB to work?

Rubbish. Even if the the SD decoders were phased out, the HD replacement would be single view, only requiring one cable.

Thanks

Thanks for the comments, I was shocked when I was first told they were going to phase them out! For one thing thousands of people would have to buy new decoders and probably thousands of complexes like ours throughout the country would be left without reception. The guy who told me this little story obviously got his facts totally wrong!

Even if they were to phase them out they will still support the decoders. So anyone with a decoder could still use it, there just wouldn't be any new ones for sale.

What they are phasing out is the old analogue MNet decoders, I think that's what he was getting confused about

Phased out probably = replaced with newer tech i.e. cheap HD decoders and NOT the inability to use a SD decoder one day.

There's two things here... yes they are phasing out the analog decoders. That's been ongoing for quite a while now.

Eventually, in my opinion everyone will be forced over to HD, and there will likely be HD decoders without PVR, and some with. Going to take a while yet... as they are still busy slowly, one day at a time, one year at a time "forcing" people over to the standard definition DSTV.

Maybe once they have changed over to DVB-S2? I wonder how much it would cost them to replace all the in-field decoders.

I have a SD PVR and a HD PVR, have protection plan on both... so if they phase out the SD PVR, what will they replace mine with?

They are currently only fasing out the old Analog Decoders that where used for MNET/CSN.. Those were the Comcrypt/Delta Decoders.. The DSTV decoders are still in use, but it would be better for users to switch over to the 'newer' 11xx decoders or the HD decoders..
