PhD graduate can't find work

Even if the offer was low this clown decides to post his dissatisfaction on a public forum. Now even less people will be willing to offer him employment.

Pretty fkng stupid for someone with so many degrees. Comes across as an ungrateful POS.

Not surprised. Good luck.. what people sometimes forget is that inflation happens so unless u get going u get left behind fast

Probably getting bad advice from a politically compromised person.

Perhaps he must just take up a teaching post as he's already gone this far in academics.
 
Looks like he was offered a training stipend of R3500/m, with a "let's see" salary at the end. I can't blame him for being pissed. I do think that he needs to shut down that twitter account though - a basic Google search of his name is dominated by dodgy articles resulting from his posts rather than his research or professional activities. His twitter posts also don't paint a good picture themselves.

Google doesn't usually find scholarly articles unless you explicitly go to scholar.google.com. Just google Brian Cox, or Tim Noakes, or any other academic you know of. You won't see their scholarly works on normal Google.

That being said - you should be paid according to the job you're doing, not according to your qualifications. It's in rather poor taste to trash-talk the city after they offered him a job. 3.5k/m is better than being unemployed, IMO.

On the other hand - accusing the city of taking a chance to get political brownie points is probably not far off the mark. :rolleyes:

That is because they are public figures, and a bunch of media articles show up first. For every other academic, publications and professional activities absolutely do show up, myself included.

That's true, but with those qualifications, he shouldn't be doing a job that only justifies R3.5k/m. I would have sorted out the details before the original publication about taking the job was even made. Now he's put himself in a situation where he has to tell people why he is still looking for work.
 
Might have been CoCT that made it public. I forget the order of operations?

I seem to recall some news about him not being able to find work then a couple of days later Patricia announcing that she was hiring him for an internship or something.

IIRC he first moaned about not getting work on twitter, then there was an article about it, which brought it to Patricia's attention, shortly after which she announced not only that she offered him a job, but that he had accepted it and she gave a start date too! (Which created many subsequent articles). How this last bit happened without discussing finances is beyond me, but it's blowing up in both their faces.

Where did you come up with the R3,500 per month figure?
 
R3500 pm is plain ridiculous. He's past basic internship phase.

You make it sound like its a fallback to get a job as an Academic. Know a few people in the field and I can tell you its not necessarily easy to get in.

This is true. Not too hard to get post-doc spots here and there, but it's not a job as such, you're still to all intents and purposes a student with a slightly bigger grant than most. But actually getting a proper job is tough, as positions in universities tend to be a bit scarce.

Very few private sector companies doing proper research like this, esp. in South Africa. Does CSIR count as private sector? It isn't a university as such.
