Hi. I'm planning a holiday to Asia later this year (November) and currently looking for good deals. Found return tickets to Phuket for R5900 on Malaysian airways. Is that a good deal? Anyone know if it can be had for less?

Is it better to buy a package including accommodation or rather do it separately yourself?

Thank you.

Hi
Is this a direct fight?
Beware of the packages some of them has nice hotels but it was far from the beach.
We Stayed in the Baan Laimai on Patong beach. We booked our accomodation in Bangkok rather than from here. And we got it for a steal. Breakfast included.
Beware of SA Deals they make you pay per person where the hotels in Phuket charges per room.

Generally the packages including accommodation work out cheaper. How many days was that deal for and which hotel in Phuket if accom was included? Sounds about right for 7-10 days.

A good tip is that if you do get a package including accommodation, you don't have to stay for only the package period. We often get a 7 day deal with a hotel, and ask them to move the return flight out by week or so which doesn't cost anything extra and find another hotel or travel around - e.g. well worth booking a cheap internal Thai flight to Bangkok/Chiang Mai and staying there for a few days. Thai accommodation can be very reasonable if you do a little research and is so abundant that you can virtually just pitch up at most places, especially if you are travelling in the low season (now).

Just a side note when we were there 2 weeks ago the hotel was not finished. There were wings they were still working on. This did not bother us. And the work they did happend in normal hours when you are not at the resort.

Oh and the only downside with Malaysian Airways is that SA is on their South American route, so, although it's not a bad airline, by the time the plane reaches JHB it's been from Sao Paolo, to CPT to JHB and is often full of very travel worn (and smelly) passengers who've already been flying for 18hrs.

It transits in kuala lumpur. Since you booked your accommodation in Bangkok, I'm guessing you don't need a visa? So you flew to Bangkok and then to phuket?

Air Malaysia has flights directly from KL to Phuket. This is preferable to a stopover in Banngkok, unless you're planning on spending a few days in BKK.

That's too much. Phuck it :D

My wife has just booked to Phuket on Malaysian Airways flying from Durban for R7585.If you are flying from Joburg it's about right-R1685 Dbn to Jhb.Other quotes we got were around R8300-R8500.She leaves in a month's time.

Yes. No visas. Our transit were in Addis though.
And then you have a hours flight to Phuket. Taking the bus will take you 10 hours from bangkok to phuket. But after the long flights a bus would have driven me insane :o.
Do you stop over on the main airport in KL or the small one. The small airport's has hole's for toilets. :D Our Ausie friends was stuck there for 6 hours.

Our total costs for the fights per couple was R14 000 that includes the hop from Bangkok to phuket. Those ticket prices are not bad! And you only change airplanes once.

So if my maths is correct, all the flights cost you R7000 per person? How much will accomodation cost per night, roughly? I'm used to staying in hostels from my european holidays but I'm hoping Asian hotels are cheaper.

Yes you are correct.

R600 B&B per couple. That included the mini bar ( which had mostly water and cooldrinks no hard stuff but it is awsome since you can not drink tap water. )

if you can try flying Singapore air or cathay.
really good airlines.

It was half the price of the holiday inn.. next door and I can tell you just as nice.

And the service! ai. Thailand spoilt things for me. I will never feel the same about:
Coffee ( yanks but still my first time Starbucks )
Service : always friendly and trying to do it as fast as they can with a smile.
Sea food: I had two prawns and were stuffed... So fresh so tasty :)

Oh just the taxi's can not be on time. Universal thing it seems :D

I am flying to Thailand next Thursday with Qatar Air for R4622.00 return from Cape Town. That was a huge special though.

The other airlines are Malaysia Air, Singapore Air and Thai Air.

With All three airlines you are going to have a stopover somewhere, but the flights vary from 1 to 1 and a half hours.

All three airlines are great.

A tip: Get a price off the websites of the airlines and take it to Flight Centre as they will beat any price. You will get a further R200+ off the ticket price. :D

I always do the d.i.y. option as it is very easy to get accommodation.

Have a look at this place, I have stayed there since 2000 and are paying this year R300 per room B&B. http://www.tropica-bungalow.com/

It is on the Main Beach Road on the corner of Bangla Rd right next to Seafood Patong. (Bangla Rd. is the main party road.)

Also remember that November is high season so accommodation prices are high. try to be there on Loy Krathong which is in the first week of November, it is a great festival.

I wanted to go later in the year to avoid monsoon season which is apparently from now till October.
