Phuket ticket prices

Remember to take a room with an aircon, if you do not like the heat that much. You will want one. :D

Later this year flying with Singapore airlines. Singapore, Phuket, Koi Samui and Bangkok. Must say cannot wait

Just a side note when we were there 2 weeks ago the hotel was not finished. There were wings they were still working on. This did not bother us. And the work they did happend in normal hours when you are not at the resort.

Does the hotel look as good as the pictures on their site? Just got an online quote for 8 days accommodation in a superior room for R3700, wow!

I wanted to go later in the year to avoid monsoon season which is apparently from now till October.

I have been in Thailand every month of the year and have never had problems with the weather. Monsoon season means that on some days you get an afternoon shower. Great excuse to sit in a pub and have a Singha with a green curry.

@ ID10: I am doing Bangkok-Samui-Phuket-Bangkok next week for two weeks.

A nice budget place that is very central on Samui is Suneast Bungalows.http://www.thesuneastbungalows.com/home.asp The standard rooms are perfect.

Just as good. Promise.

Like I said part of the hotel is still under construction. But It realy does not bother anybody.
The rooms look just as on the pictures. Ours looked just like the Delux room they just swoped our bed for a double.

I'll find a pic to show what I mean by "underconstruction"

I think they are rebuilding the old hotel making it new and a few wings has not opened yet.

I'm planning a trip to the far east myself... with the intention of going in the low season - September.

I'll be flying from CT to KUL (spending a few days there) via JNB and then to HKT and total cost for one way trip to Phuket is R5168 (Incl ALL taxes). Flights with SAA and Malaysia. So R5900 for a round trip is a a bargain!

As for Accomodation, I had my heart set on Andaman White Beach Resort. Right on the beach. Not the cheapest, but they are 5* and that will set you back R1100/night inclusvce of Breakfast and Basic Mini bar plus 'complimentary' seasonal fruits in the afternoon.

@ Violet: Just remember that Phuket is a big island and travelling from other beaches to Patong is expensive. There is a taxi mafia on the island that charge exorbitant fees. From Thalang to Patong is about a 45 min drive and at night they will charge you an arm and a leg. So the bottom line is if you wish to stay at a hotel and sit on the beach the whole day and eat in the same restaurant each night that place is perfect, if you want a bit of variety then you are better off at beaches nearer to Patong. September on the Andaman coast is a great time to visit Thailand. You can also look at the Krabi and Koh Lanta area.

Eeeekkkk - can you please define 'exorbitant fees' - as that sounds rather off-putting??? Tho I've read up a lot about Taxi-drivers scamming tourists... it is always nice knowing what to look out for!

Yeah, I'm aware of the distance from Patong Beach to my accommodation... which is what appealed to me. I'm not a party type of person, so night life does not appeal to me. Will try it for one night just to tick the NIGHT LIFE in PHUKET box :)

My day trips will definitely take me to Patong Beach, but my stay there will only be for 4 days... which I believe will give me sufficient insight as to whether I would want to return to Phuket.

i think i'm going to stay in a hostel. anyone had experience with that there?

Is there anything special to do or see in Phuket or is it basically just beaches and stuff...like coming from Joburg, is it worth going to Phuket or may as well just fly down to Durbs, same thing, no?

WE were there 2 weeks ago. Tuk tuks are not that expensive and you need to bargain for everything. Remember they see you coming they will try to first charge as much as they can. Taxi's in bangkok was not that expensive. Rather cheap.

Remember when you are shopping to bargain.

If you do not go Island hopping and the activities they have you will just sit and do nothing. But it is shopping heaven, you can go see the biggest budha, there is a zoo with tigers.

We did 4 days of exploring. IT was worht it.

Did you just visit Phuket? As I'll be visiting Kuala Lumpur and Beijing as well. Advice and tips would be much appreciated :-)

Sorry. Just Bangkok and Phuket. Had a stop over in Addis Abbeba. if we went out of the airport we would have had to have yellow Fever injections. So we just stayed put.
They do ask for your medical certificate if you land in Thailand and when you get back to SA.

Beware of the Tuk Tuks. They are sponsored by the local businesses and will stop at each of them to get a "free Gas" stamp.
But you can Hire a scooter in phuket for R 100 a day.
