Pick'n'Pay AIM TVs discussion

I am pretty keen to get back home and have a closer look at the AIM. So far I could see the difference going 4K with the much smaller pixels, they were noticeable on the 50" FHD Hisense. I already went 4K on my PC and it is like seeing with new eyes, but that is sitting closer to the screen. Sitting on the couch if you looked real good you could see the pixels on the Hisense.

Here at the holiday house everyone remarked that the Hisense D-LED has a nicer picture quality than the Samsung PDP, so I am happy about that. Also happy to ditch the clunky "smart" features of the Sammy for a Mi TV stick with the Hisense.

As for the AIM back home, I'll get back to you when I have had a closer look. The menus are even more primitive that on the Hisense though, I suspect they have the same UI running on everything from their smallest TV up to their 75".
Wow how could the controls be more primitive then one from 2014? Even in 2014 I found them primitive compared to the Samsung it replaced.
The two newer Hisense TVs I've got menus are pretty good.

I was very impressed with the newer Hisense models we got at the office after revamping. They had very slick UIs and made for a good projector replacement. Pity we only got to use them for a couple of month before shifting to work from home.

I'll take some pics of the menu system, it reminds me a lot of the 19" Sinotec my daughter had. It offers the bare essentials. For me it is a positive that this is not a smart TV, I can hookup whatever smart I feel like and in my case the Telkom LiT box is running 4K60hz with no issues.

Just not the remotes on the U7/8QF series, they honestly feel cheap. My N5000 from 3 years ago feels premium and it was a cheaper TV. Hell even the old one felt great besides 1 breaking.

Those menus don't look too bad actually. Old school but functional, the image doesn't look bad at all. I've never peeled that off TVs. I'll have to check if they are still on mine, definitely wasn't one on the D50p36?

I am now convinced that the reason TV manufacturers include such horrible sound in sets are to sell sound bars.

Hooked up this 2.0 Hisense 60watt soundbar via ARC and the sound is infinitely better, yet when I look at the size of the soundbar cabinet and the bottom part of the TV there is definitely space to fit in the soundbar hardware. Come to think of it, the size of the speakers look the same, it's just the TV has 8watt units as opposed to the 60watts in the soundbar.

This is my new conspiracy theory and I'm sticking to it.

All in I now stand at R5500 and I am pleased with the end result.

Is that the one for R999? Is there hdmi out as well? There are also TVs with Soundbars built in.

True, there are TVs with built in soundbars but that just proves my point that a "TV with soundbar" is just saying "here is a TV with the sound you should be getting"

I get the need for subs and surround systems, those are extras that I do not expect to be included in a TV.

But there is no reason a 58" set like this cannot contain decent stereo sound like what I had to pay R999 extra for.

Just include powerful sound to that level as standard and you will still sell suns and surround sound setups to people that want it.

Generally the speakers are cheap, also the space below the TVs are small and no space. But this 58" TV sound isn't bad if I turn on what they call Total Sonic.
Other then that if my MIL can hear the TV at 20 that's good. The LED50p36 we had to ramp that up to 35 maybe 40.IMG_20210408_204013_edit_639540061501891.jpg

The LED50p36 has some of the best 2x10watt speakers in the business. I won't fault those at all. Where the Hisense is now at the holiday house is a massive room and it manages to fill it with decent sound.

Still, the 60watt stereo soundbar is incredible and it is a shame we can't buy TVs with that kind of sound built in.

Kinda rich coming from the guy that bought a 58" at Pick'n'Pay, right ?

That Aim tv looked terrible at the store but looks so much better in your pics.

I was tempted to buy it but wasn't familiar with AIM quality etc.

It seems like a good buy.

They were pretty good speakers on that Hisense often played movies and such without the soundbar or speaker system, but my MIL still moaned so the volume went up to 40 and that was really loud, the 58N5000 now in the room she can hear it at a lower "volume", they are also only 10w speakers but they somehow sound a bit richer. They actually sound better then the 65U7QF in my lounge.

A friend of mine looked at a few AIM TVs at the Brackenfell PnP Hypermarket and said they were all hooked up to the same standard definition source via coax, making it impossible to get a good idea of the picture quality.

Personally I'm pretty happy with it, I have watched some 4K content on it and it looks good, especially considering this is under R5k.

I just remembered my younger brother had purchased an Aim TV just over a year ago. Think it might have been the same one. He did encounter an issue (which o suspect was the kids) and went to pick n pay where he could get a replacement or his money back. He took a replacement and all is well.

So besides the quality, I think the after sales from pick n pay is also quite awesome.

Thanks @bwana for making this the AIM TV thread.

Seems I lost my till slip for the TV so warranty could be a problem. I emailed PnP asking if they can email me a copy seeing as that is now a thing if you enable it on the app. Otherwise I might just have to go back to the store where I bought it to have the slip printed again. The warranty being done by PnP is one of the mail reasons why I bought it as they are always very flexible with returns.

Not bought a TV in years, bought a few monitors tho.
There are the Mecer ones, but they do not match the value you get from AIM. The past week we watched a couple of series on Showmax and the combination of the 58" TV and 2.0 Hisense soundbar is excellent. The only 4K content I watch is Youtube and it looks amazing.

Let's hope it is durable and that I won't have to deal with warranty claims.

My wife and mom seems to have valid TC licenses so buying a TV is not a problem for me.

Buying a TV is not a problem, I am one of those who have had a TV lisence from before Pa fell off, of the bus. In the bedroom I have a 27 inch Samsung 1080p monitor, awesome picture, [ 1080p at 50 FPS ] with a JBL 2.0 sound bar, with a nVidia Shield TV Pro.

In the end, I will probably buy a 40 - 43 inch 4k TV simply because they are cheaper than monitors at that size

My mom got so used to the 50" Hisense at the holiday house that she said she was thinking of getting something bigger back home. She still has an ancient 32" Sony Bravia LCD. So the wife and I decided we'll give her a mothers day surprise.
