Pigeon-Power versus ADSL

Telkom is not the only business option available. Call Centres can use, amongst others, Neotel, MTN or Vodacom Business ADSL/other solutions as well.

This was a publicity PR stunt and nothing else. Don't read too much into it.

We are all very aware of high telecoms prices in SA. A stunt like this does nothing to help.
Disagree, those other options you list are just as expensive.
We have no cheap and reliable options here and would agree with psichron

I did not say that they were cheaper.

Well where is the competition?
It's like two dealers trying to sell the same car for the same price. Unless you believe the data that comes through one ISP is different to the other...

Is that not what we are all complaining about?

ATM there is more collusion than competition!

100% PR value, am not sure !!!!!

Winston, the bird got 200% PR value- BUT who remembers the name of the call centre ???? I for one, do NOT.

This articles just kills it all! Of course no one was gonna really use pigeons from now on

Pigeons can also be bonded, and although the upgrade takes about 18 days, the increase in bandwidth is exponential.

Who decided on the distance this bird had to travel? Who decided on the amount of data?

Everything was in favor of the bird... don't get me wrong, I hate telscum with a passion. But this test did not prove anything and the author of this article is SPOT ON!

Maybe the real point is this:

For all the billions in marketing and PR by the Telecoms companies, the quality and affordability of the new-fangled solutions they offer is not that significantly better than the older technologies.

Winston shows that things have not really come that far from postal rocks, forked sticks and carrier pigeons!

The value proposition has deteriorated and reliability and performance have not really improved.

The point was to make Telkom a laughing stock.
Point made, methinks.

but me thinks there was no point yes lets all laugh at telkom for failing when you tie him up then tell him to race a pigeon

there is no way telkom could win even virgins 50mbs line would be slower by a few hours

40mbps = around 4Mbps throughput... how much data was sent by pigeon now?

comparing these two technologies is stupid.

why not just get in your car with the data card and drive the data to where you need it?

or use a courier and send a whole hard drive.

The point is... you will use the best technology available for your need... and what this client in Howick is using is obviously not the best solution.

Telkom loves to get their name in the media, even if its bad. Any advertisement is good advertisement unfortunately(if you are a monopoly)

Apparently, there is also a new service offered where you can send terabytes of information overseas for far less. Oh wait, it's called DHL... Poor article and completely missing the point of the exercise.

What exactly was the point of the exercise? To fling mud at Telkom? To point out the inadequacies of existing technology?

You would think they could at least have done it in a more realistic manner.

This exercise would have had the same results in most places in the world except for the three or four most developed countries... and if you want to live there... be prepared to pay ten times more for the cost of living.

If they had simply carried the data card by vehicle, everybody would have ho-hummed at the exercise and said... "well, duh!"
