these are just excuses that have been made up to cover telkom's reputation, not that they have a reputation for being on the good side of things lol

Telkom is still slower than a pigeon. And what ever "who ever" argue, it will never ever change this experiment. 10 out of 10 for the person that generated this thought.

so why don't you move to a country then that offers 100 Mbit connections? Where you can pay for it with your hard earned cash? You do have a job don't you?

Or you can just use pigeons to download all your warez from now on. :rolleyes:
 
1. No Redundancy - cable breaks; can't wait for 2010 to fall over a tiny bit...
2. Very High Latency - online gaming so fast
3. Reliability - see 1, not to mention any other ****ups that occurs regularly
4. One Way - to the bank.
5. Support and Trouble Shooting - 2 technicians, many phone calls then dsl line sorted.
6. Scalability - bet vodacom would still be waiting for them to upgrade their grid, hence vodac going their own network route.

Not like Telkom is particularly good with any of these. See the numerous threads about SAIX's crap latency, unreliability and crappy support. ADSL may not be "one-way" but you say yourself that upload speeds suck. And the Telkom network is old, expensive and use outdated technology. Hardly scalable in the modern sense of the word.

Everybody keeps saying, "yes, but the business should have rented multi-hundred thousand rand leased lines to do the job properly". But that is exactly the point! Reliable data connections are vastly overpriced, and the connections that -are- affordable are severely outdated and slow.

What an idiotic article. Duh it's a marketing stunt. Duh even more, however, that 4Gb of data should be transferable much quicker than is currently possible for most.

It won't work, seeing as the pigeon would beat all those overseas connections too if you make the distance sufficiently short. I guess he's screwed, no Internet connection in the world could beat physically transferring large amounts of data.

Exactly. The bird trick was funny as hell, but not very practical.

The post office has fantastic insurance. If I remember correctly, you can insure the parcel you send, for up to R60k. Easy way to get rich, if the post office staff keep stealing your parcels.

No other system in the world beats sending data via the post office/insured courier.

It's ultra high volume, also ultra high speed considering comparable telkom speeds, with ultra high encryption of the data on disc, providing the best data security and ultra high insurance for the data, that is not even at risk of being sniffed or extracted.

Lastly and most importantly, it's ultra cheap...1TB tranfer via telkom, at around R45 per gig costs R45 000 000...

Uncapped is cheaper, some people would say...

Let's imagine an unbelievable 8Mbps uncapped, unthrottled and unshaped at a R3000 per month.

Upload at an effective best of around 10%, of the 10% download speed of the line, as usual.

To compete against the parcel at download speed, it takes no less than 48MB/minute, 2880MB/hour, 69120GB/24Hours, 483840GB/Week, 967680GB/2weeks...

SNAIL MAIL BEATS tELKOM BY 2 WEEKS, AT A COST, SEVERAL TIMES LESS...

...With insurance for your data, which telkom can NEVER offer.

Now remember that the above, was downloading...

SENDING the data via telkom, would take 10 times longer...as in 4months...at the "never gonna happen" price of R3000/month for 8Mbps uncapped, unthrottled and unshaped.
 
RE: The article writer's "Latency" argument, total bull.

The company clearly states that they need to transfer voice *records* over every night to their branch. So clearly they only need Winston to transfer the data TO the other branch. There's no need for any feedback other than "Winston arrived"

Bump up that SD card to it's full potential and Winston is one mean powered bird backing up and transferring data at greater speeds than our Super-Telkom can ever dream to accomplish.

If they were doing VOIP, then I'd agree... author need's to do her research a bit before writing this ***

Reliability? It's a ****ing homing pigeon. These are born and bred to race and "find home". The author probably never even attended an event like that before. These pigeons never lose their way. And the pellet gun? HA. They don't even rest really.... and if a ****ing pellet gun can shoot that high it should be confiscated by the parents

Winston can have a Wendy. Wendy is trained to go back where Winston only goes "to".... how idiotic is this author's "arguments"

Why would they need to shout at anyone? As the author stated. Winston is there. So? That means the "Data link" has done it's job.

And what IF their backup's get too big and he has no more leg room? Seriously? You write for "Technology Concepts"

Have you *SEEN* the amount of data you can do on 1 SD card? No? Thought so... go do some more research.
 
Scaleability – What happens when need three more Winstons because the first one has no more legroom? What do you do when your business grows, or you launch a new service that needs more connectivity? A business-focussed ISP can rapidly upgrade your connection, or recommend ways to get more out of what you have.

I do agree, the Winston PR stunt (or whatever it was) did a good job of bringing the poor bandwidth offered by South African telecoms to the surface again. Replace the "Telkom" line with ANY other service provider connection and you have the real story behind the stunt of Winston. NONE of the current telecom providers can really give you what you need... I always want the newest and latest TV, Laptop or Toy, but it comes at a price and the same applies to big-bandwidth-ripping lines.

So if Winston does have his Wendy, will P2P now be replaced by W2W (aka Pigeon-2-Pigeon) Wow... latest series just a wing away :)

Good job I only saw this article now. Most comments covered what I wanted to say. Of course the stunt means nothing... redundancy... latency blah and blah. The fact of the matter is Telkom is the new laughing stock as even my clan mates from Europe and the US know about it, and I assume they aren't the only ones. For example read here plz.
