I've played around with my own little ping proggie, and think I anderstand why they are so volative.(300ms sweetspot)

But to test the theory better, I need someone with low ping time to Sentech (i.e. isdn, adsl, lan). Then he must send me UDP packets with I tcpdump or the other way round.

Is there any interest in ping theory ?

Rofl, at your sig Nic.

I'll be more than happy to fire up a ping for you from my ADSL connection, or via MTNNS.

It's odd though. Sentech still don't allow one to ping your direct PPP peer, which makes it difficult to tell if the jumpiness is at the first hop, or the backlinks.

i dont think i count coz im on the sentech network, but i get high ping time inside and pinging outside.

have a look here
http://www.myadsl.co.za/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2166

i intrested in doing tests with you.

Hell yeah, im interested. I only got a sentech connection though so dont know if I can help but if I can just give a shout.(hmmm actually I have a 128k ISDN line at work so I can probably help)

Will this theory of yours by any chance help in getting the ping times lower? or would it just explain why the pings are so high?

I hope someone would be able tho shed some light on all of this just something solid like the pings are gonna suck live with it it, or woooot look what I discovered.

You've either been in a coma for the past 10 months, just woke up and now suffer from verbal diarrhea or you've recently discovered coffee and should cut back on your intake. [;)]

I don't think the problem is his post rate. I think the problem is his "useless" post rate. It's a pain in the ass to have to read through 4 useless replies in a thread.

e.g. In this thread out of 9 responses, 3 are basically useless, with insane amounts of quoting...

This isn't IRC, it's a forum. If you want to use IRC, then get on #mywireless. Ask a useful question, or post a useful answer, or don't post at all. Just because a thread has one of those flaming little icons on the listing doesn't mean that you have to hit the reply button to "reserve your spot in this historical post".

It wastes RPM's database, diskspace, and bandwidth.

Agreed, this is not a competition to see how fast you can get a few stars under your name.

Try to push the SNR back into the black, I have the following to report:

Tanks to Rodent, I was able to collect some insightfull UDP stats. He sent UDP packets at 200ms intervals to me. Most of them arrived in 200ms intervals, EXCEPT some of them arrived a full 200ms late i.e. with the next one. As if the tower/router waited for a buffer to fill before sending.

Does this mean that you can boost ping times by sending lots of useless data ? (That reminds me of someone...)

I'll do a test...

I must say Nic, that I've had some strange results on that. When I download a file from, say tucows. The pings appear to actually be more stable, and lower in latency than normal.

Which is quite odd.

Not sure what you're doing, why do you expect a UDP ping or ICMP ping to have any substantialy different value?

We're not returning any packets. Rather looking at the timing of each packet in a stream.

A ping time is much more complicated because it is made up out of in time and out time. Plus you don't have control over when the returning packet is sent.

Cool thing is, if ProAsm could confirm this somehow, the program they're using to manage the towers, will update all of them in a matter of seconds [:)] so then gaming for all? [8D]

Did ya think of that all by ur self or did mommy helped ya again?!
