Pit Bulls attack beach jogger

Hold my shoes guys, I need to quickly take a photograph of these 2 pitbulls that are mauling my bits...

So in 1 article there's been a dog mistype, fine. What about the other N articles in the last 6 months? Where are the same number of articles about other dog breeds (/groups) that are mauling people?

"It's a media conspiracy"

Masters are liable for the delicts of their animals. This is an outrage. Hopefully he sues the pants off the owner. My suit would start at R30m.

I highly doubt an SA court would award you 30mil in damages, secondly I doubt the dog owner has the money.

It's not just pitbulls. It seems to be a worrying trend that people can now play on the beach / promenade with their dogs unleashed.

I have a purebred Pitbull from a reputable dealer. Most wonderful temperament of any dog I've ever owned and also the most loyal.

She loves people and other dogs. She cries if she sees another dog across the road and she cant get to him, because she wants to go play. But for some reason she does have an absolute killer instinct when it comes to cats. She turns into an absolute beast when she sees one, and will no doubt tear it to shreds if given the opportunity. Fortunately all the cats in the complex are quick and agile and always get away if she gives chase.

Pitbulls do have more fight instinct and prey drive than most other dogs I've seen, but I believe most of these incidents are due to reckless and negligent owners who either severely mistreat the animals, or are careless and let them roam free in public places unsupervised.

Its kind of like irresponsible gun owners. You read about some crazy firearm incident every so often and it hardens public perception. Its usually the careless and reckless 5% of owners who give everyone a bad name.

result of some mommy to lazy to work and now is breeding puppies in her backyard.
Breeding animals should stop. We have enough. If in 5 years from now we find that we have a shortage of something we can import stock. This stupid back yard and inbreeding causes more trouble than it is worth.

and then sometimes they breed with rescued fight dogs. always wondered if the pups pickup any mannerisms..

Basically ban the dogs and if somebody want to own a pitbull, it should be trained and you should have a license to have one. I can agree with that.

Even if you could legislate that, you couldn't fully enforce it. Its not realistic at all. It would be like trying to ban alcohol because every weekend some drunk idiot gets behind a wheel and causes a car crash.

I think its more about creating public awareness. People need to understand these are not killing machines (that's utter rubbish), but at the same time this is not a dog for a novice first time owner. This is not the kind of dog you leave in the backyard, come home to feed it once a day and ignore it the rest of the time. If you want that, get a Golden Lab. They also love everyone unconditionally and will even lick the intruders breaking into your home and play ball with them.

The Pitbull breed needs puppy socializing from a young age. It needs a stern owner who is a 'pack leader' and takes the lead. These dogs will test their boundaries and are very headstrong. They will walk all over you if you let them. Its a dog that requires your involvement, attention and training. And when you get that right, they are a fantastic dog to be around.

I find it quite amusing that those that vilify the breed the most, are usually people who have never owned one, or haven't even really interacted with them at all.

As I said, the term ''pit bull'' covers at least 5 recognised breeds, excluding the cross breeds. So which breed exactly is the problem?

Is it the American Pit Bull Terrier? The American Staffordshire Terrier? The American Bully? The Staffordshire Bull Terrier? The American Bulldog? Or any one of those that has been crossed with who knows what in some backyard puppy mill?

I also challenge you to Google those breeds and tell me if you can definitively tell them apart.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier?

Weird in the UK staffies seem to have a bad rep and also banned in many countries. Over here I've never heard anything bad about 'staffies'

You sir are 100% correct. Our law enforcement are useless and it won't really achieve anything. Awareness is good a good idea.

The main problem in South Africa and I am speaking about all dogs breeds. Anybody can get a dog and the dogs do not legally require training and again, even if they did who would enforce this.

I can say I have never owned one and would not get a pit bull as a dog. I don't like the way they look but that's just me.

Is that a fact? Stay at home mommy and lazy don't usually go together in my experience unless their is a nanny and a housekeeper in which case they don't need a job. It really doesn't strike me as the demographic that would be typical of breeding power breeds, is it?

Totally agree with the backyard breeding being banned.
