DURBAN - A 30-year old man was rushed to hospital this morning after he was attacked by two Pit Bulls. The man was

jogging along Tinley Manor Beach on the north coast when the dogs attacked him.

Janus van Schalkwyk of IPSS Medical Rescue said the man sustained severe injuries to both arms and legs.

Van Schalkwyk said the man tried to fend off the two dogs, unsuccessfully.

"The owner later saw what was happening, he ran down and tried to pull the dogs of," he said.

Oh no but this can't be, pitbulls are supposedly such friendly dogs.

Shame on the owner for letting his dogs run unleashed on the beach AND not paying attention. WTF is that?

These dogs should be banned. It is becoming painfully apparent that hoards of owners in South Africa are unable to raise and care for these dogs appropriately and it is endangering other people and animals, not to mention how easy it is to train and use these animals in illegal activities causing suffering to the dogs.

Masters are liable for the delicts of their animals. This is an outrage. Hopefully he sues the pants off the owner. My suit would start at R30m.

+100

Problem parents, not problem children. Same goes for pets.

Were they real pitbulls though, or just some medium/large animal with 4 legs and a tail and not a cat?

result of some mommy to lazy to work and now is breeding puppies in her backyard.
Breeding animals should stop. We have enough. If in 5 years from now we find that we have a shortage of something we can import stock. This stupid back yard and inbreeding causes more trouble than it is worth.

You're right. People should have a license to breed animals, and heavily prosecuted if they don't. It is not fair to them.

There are never any pics of the dogs and as I have pointed out in numerous other threads, ''pit bull'' is an umbrella term for about 4 or 5 breeds that share a very close resemblance and temperament. As Mila pointed out, in SA this is exacerbated by the proliferation of backyard breeders where poor bloodlines are common through over breeding and cross breeding.

The media unfortunately helps fuel the spread of misinformation and the demonisation of the breed(s). One article that was linked on myBB was edited at a later time with ''pit bull'' removed because the pseudo-journalist jumped to a conclusion without knowing what they were talking about. In another article the journalist called it a pit bull while the SAPS official that responded to it was quoted saying it was ''a pit bull-type cross breed''.

The ill-informed public has bought in to it with vigor, so we are now in the unfortunate situation where it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck.

Hold my shoes guys, I need to quickly take a photograph of these 2 pitbulls that are mauling my bits...

So in 1 article there's been a dog mistype, fine. What about the other N articles in the last 6 months? Where are the same number of articles about other dog breeds (/groups) that are mauling people?
