Actually, the use of a choke chain with a powerful dog like an APBT (American Pit Bull Terrier - please note the distinction - APBT is an actual breed whereas 'pitbull type dog' is an epithet and a hateful one at that) or English Bull Terrier is ill advised as the dog is likely to injure itself.
The suggested apparatus is called a Gentle Leader and is more like a bit (as in: horses) in that any forward force used by the animal is translated into downward force on the muzzle. This is a submissive posture for a dog and not one they would continue to force themselves into.
The big problem with the Gentle Leader is that it has one thin section of lead that goes over the muzzle, the uninitiated often mistake this for an actual muzzle (the kind that keeps the dogs jaws shut) thus further enhancing the unfortunate image the public has of these animals.

My actual point here is that people like the OP and people who backyard breed vicious animals are equal enemies of these animals. They are not 'dog aware' and they cause untold hassles for people who do make the effort to become educated and responsible keepers of animals like the APBT and EBT... even Rotties and German sheperds.

If the people who feel strongly as the OP does about things like this were able to rationalise and reason then they would see that instead of antagonising responsible owners by being ignorant and calling for blanket legislation they could learn from each other and work together to enact actual change by rooting out the bad elements.

Obviously owners are part of the problem. Which breeds are most popular with people who want to raise vicious dogs? Make ownership contingent on being held responsible for any attack.

Obviously if your dog attacks me or any of my pets either you'll have to have it put down or I will.
 
Pitbulls are pitbulls and their inherent characteristics are aggression and they are vicious.
They were served short in the brain queue.

Show me a pittie that does duty as a sniffer. Show me a pittie that is a guide dog. Tell me that they can herd or that they are great retrievers. Please pose with your pittie with all the prizes won at obedience trials. Convince me that they can do anything intelligent; not even the Police or security patrols need or want them. They keep intruders away because of their reputation if anything.

Most dogs display aggro when they are confronted in certain situations but their reaction is mild compared to the ferociousness of the pitbull.

There are many more breeds that make better pets; in fact pitties rank at the bottom of the pile.

But when the bugger comes and snuggles his head on my lap and looks into my eyes, hell, I feel good.:)

My views:

Pitbulls are very nice dogs. I owned a pure bred one for 2 years. Took him to puppy school etc. Very well behaved, did not fight with any of the other 5 dogs we had on the property. Lovable, slept in front of our bed. Had to give him up as we moved into a complex which only allowed small dogs.
Boerboels, excellent family dogs, I currently have 1 pure bred female and one male that is crossed with a bull mastiff. Both are excellent watch dogs. The female is a bit over protective when it comes to my wife. Believe me no-one enters the yard.
Both dogs are excellent with children, just want to play. By brother in laws kids ride them like horses.

I have been bitten by an Alsatian, miniature Doberman, cat, cockatiel, budgies, fish, rotweiler and by my wife. LOL
Does this make the breed good or bad? All animals will "attack" when their own safety is threatened, or when it come to food. It is their nature.

We as humans must find a way to live with that. We are the intelligent species not them.

There re many examples of these. The APBT is a highly accomplished service dog in many parts of the USA.

You two are both morons for turning the debate into an ad hominem one, and for using selective facts to prove your points. I do agree with Pitbull's views but I'll be damned if I'm going to join this debate.
