Good luck ordering through Google with a SA card and SA billing address. Order might go through but will be cancelled eventually as it goes against their sales terms.

Pre orders are also available on Amazon using a US shipping address and you'll get the same pricing plus the watch.
 
Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro ship with Android 14. The table in the My broadband report says Android 13

The only good thing about the Google Pixel devices in South Africa, is the lack of bloatware and software updates. Other than that, they are expensive LTE devices that don't have most of their features enabled when using them in South Africa. The most disappointing was not being able to connect to the 5G networks (MTN & Vodacom tested). I even drove to the Vodacom Head Office to see if I could connect to their 5G network. I couldn't. I had a Samsung Galaxy A53 with me and it connected to the Vodacom 5G network without issues and gave me download speeds of more than 500Mbps. When will the South African networks and Google South Africa test and release the Google devices in South Africa?

VoWifi and VoLTE can easily be enabled without root.
5G can be enabled with root.

That said, android 14 beta had 5G enabled for unofficial countries. If it will make it to release, doubt it, but there's hope.
 
Google will provide 7 years of spare parts for the new Pixel 8 series

One of the big announcements from the Pixel 8 event was the new extended software support for this year's Pixel phones. The search giant promised 7 years of major OS and feature updates. That's quite the commitment and it's even more than what Apple is willing to offer with its iOS devices. The only thing that comes close is the Fairphone 5, depending on how you count.

Luckily, Google has thought this through and an official representative promised that the company will provide 7 years of hardware support as well. One of the few times I don’t agree with him.

Launching and killing services or features isn’t the same as new OS launched which they’ve done since Android 1.0.

They have to make Android 15, 16, 17 etc regardless of whether there is a Pixel or no Pixel. It will done - so they just need to make sure that it makes its way to the phone.

It’s very different to a service

The only genuinely critical damage was to one of the display's corners but it doesn't impede the phone's regular operation.

Can't say whether 5G works in SA ... my Pixel 7 Pro updated to Android 14 today and all works fine here in Texas. The only new thing I've briefly played with is the slightly beefed up lockscreen customisation. I'm just less into fiddling about on these stupid devices than I was five or ten years ago.
