Plasma or LCD?

The grass looks like green blur because you have low quality source. Feed it a HD source and see how beautiful it looks. Happy owner here of a 42" inch LG Edge plasma for four months now. Good blacks, low reflection, excellent contrast, low power usage, instant response time, unbelievable night time movie viewing, 3x 1.3 hdmi ports, usb divx player built in, beautiful design and the list goes on and not a hint of image retention/burn in. All for under 10k.

I compared my plasma with similar LCD's and decide to go for the plasma cause of the oveall package. Each person will have different taste. This debate is like deciding on the best colour in world.

The major debates I have heard in the past about plasma and LCD is the fact the LCD has motion blur, once you see it you never want LCD, the other debate is the fact that black is not black on LCD.

Can some of you confirm this ?

Well the best HDTV in the world is a Pioneer Plasma, it's reputed to have the deepest blacks. Plasma can deliver - no motion blur, wide angle, best contrast and at full HD resolution - it can deliver the resolution of high end LCD.

Also a 50-60 inch full HD plasma will be cheaper than a full HD LCD in that
screen size.

Sadly in 2010 Pioneer will stop producing their Kuro (Japanese for black),
sets.

I was always of the opinion that LCD had inherently better clarity than plasma. Until I saw one of these. It turned out I hadn't seen the best plasma had to offer.

But they're WAY out of my price range. For that price, rather buy a new car.

i have no problem with my 42"LCD hdtv if you give it a good signal be it tv or a dvd/movie if looks real good, give a crappy signal well anything will look like crap then. Have a plasma at work which runs a presentation constantly the poor thing has been burnt in all right.

Ether will have to become more affordable... avg price for mid range is still too high to justify few hours of TV watching ......

In my humble opinion, at the end of the day it all depends on personal preference.

I went through this exercise last year and decided on a 40" Bravia LCD. I have not looked backed since the day I plugged that baby in and started using it...

Colors are amazing, motion blur is not as bad as they make it out to be and gaming as amazing.

I still think that rear projection LCDs get a bad rep and no marketing (they're totally different to what was available 5 years ago).

I bought a Sony Bravia 50" rear projection 3LCD year before last and love it! I don't know anyone else with a TV this big or of this quality. Transformers in HD looks fantastic! You can see every little scratch and dent on Optimus Prime, and unlike the blurriness of the cinema, the battle scenes are crystal clear. Oh, I paid R17800 at the time, but I think they're retailing for around R15k at the moment, a much better option than your similar sized plasmas.

The only drawback is that it's not 1080p, it's only 720p, but when broadcast can't go higher than that, and in my opinion, the difference between 720 and 1080 is minimal, I'll take bigger size :)

Plasma prices are dropping sharply now because the EU is banning the sale of Plasma sets. This is a real problem for videophiles.

LCD - 5mS turn on time is quite slow compared to Plasma <1mS , this is what causes blurring on LCD pics.

Have a look at the HD football from the UK and our Super 14 games in HD. DO this test - look at the players in a static posture i.e. when standing still - notice how sharp the image is around the player and how you can almost "see" each blade of grass , then watch as they start running - the edges become blurred and the grass is all blurred.

Then look at a comparable Plasma set. You will see the difference.

The LCD top end sets are now only coming out with decent graphics engines. Look for PAP , PIP , 24 frame movie and also 100/120 Hz refresh rates.

Or you could just buy a 'el cheapo' and say you are satisfied.( funny how these "el cheapo's offer longer warranties"

Now that is the thing, someone deciding which to go for (like me), should not read user comments. When you get to the last comment you are worst off than when you started reading.:p

All things being equal, and for all purposes they are, I guees (as was suggested) the only option in helping you decide is to go to a reputable retailer, take a seat and watch the same movie / tv station on the different sets on show. Although I have done this, I have also noticed when it comes to watching lets say a DSTV broadcast over 4 or five sets at the same time, often it one or two of the sets have visibly bad reception, which leaves you to automatically disregard those sets. I can't help wondering if some shops do this specifically to promote some makes over others.

This brings up a question/s I've been meaning to ask.
I heard that you don't get full HD till you reach 42" ???

So I've been in the market for a TV over the last year and i thought 42" but then i also heard about the supposed digital broadcasting that's being rolled out.

But now i'm thinking i just got married, and we need to buy couches and tables and crap. So maybe i should just get a 32" for now?

So what do you think get a 32" now and move it to the bedroom later?

And do any of you know of a 32" with a digital tuner?

Be conservative and go for the 32", if it's cash you're looking to save, get the Sony 32" that's retailing for around R5999 at most places, it's not full HD, but since you're not looking to go all out, it's more than sufficient at 720p. Move that to the room in a year or two and then get the full HD 42" +.

As far as I know all plasmas and LCDs are set up to receive the digital signal, the only people that should be panicking are those with ancient CRT TVs.
