Rather think of it as fps based objective gameplay (for example move payload from A to B, 2 teams try to each capture and hold point C etc). After that the difference to other fps games is that it has a large roster of dota like characters, each with their own unique skills. There are tanks, offensive, defensive, support etc types.

A lot of the characters have weird skills, but they have some very generic characters as well. For example Soldier 76 is your generic fps soldier. For his main skill he shoots, his alt does a rocket, he runs faster than normal and can heal himself/others with a medkit he drops on the ground...and his ultimate auto-aims for you.

So you just play the easy characters like him first until you get to know everyone better.
 
@animal, thanks I just got an intro into HotS a handful of times in the past month, which i am still a noob at, so this Overwatch story is just too much for me after a long day at work, it's just not the kind of game I want to play. I understand some people might love it, and good for them :)
