So, my girlfriend has decided we need a Playstation 3. I'm not prepared to spend R5k.

What should I look for in a 2nd hand one? I see they come with different harddrives, etc., is this the only difference between consoles, or do some not have 1080p, hdmi, etc?

Saw a 2nd hand one going for late R2k's with 2 wireless controllers, two games and a 40GB harddrive.

Also, not really interested in an Xbox, mainly because of the RROD, and the life expectancy of 1yr :p

Hahahahahaha, prepared to be bashed by fanboys from all sides.
There are different SKU's regarding PS3's, the launch PAL models are 60GB and have PS2 as wel as PSOne backwards compatibility, as well as some card readers and 4 USB Ports. Note that all PS3's since launch have a HDMI 1.3 port with 1080p output. However these are pretty rare now.

The 40GB has 2 USB ports no PS2 backwards compatibility but does all the other stuff. 2K is a pretty good price be sure to demo it and check it out thoroughly though. The 80GB is the same just some come with the Dual Shock 3 Controller.

Hope this helps

Marry her!! :D

I'm not a fan of second hand console's - you don't know if its been abused and what condition the laser is in. I used to repair psx/ps2's and people really don't look after things.

At least with a new one, although its a lot more, you get a warranty where you can take it back if it dies.

With a second hand one if it dies your 2K down. Still you can get some good deals second hand and it might work longer than an original. Chance you have to take?

So i am looking for a launch ps3..no one is gonna sell me one cause it is backwards compatable, but why would you go back when forward is the only real choice.

yeh... it comes with two origina games, the condition the discs are in should be an indication of how the console was lookd after - hopefully.

GF:
She saw a S2000 in some racing game, think it was Gran Tirismo 4, now she wants the game... cause she's only allowed to be a passanger in my car.

What you need to do is find a new girlfriend that is into Xbox. Save you a few grand :)

ROFL - I chose the PS3 over the xbox, mainly because I don't feel like hassling with RROD - and want Bluray.

Not an issue on the ones that have an HDMI port, which is all of them now. Also the Xbox controller vibrates, for when she gets bored of gaming :p

Hell, you GF must find you boring? :D

Well, since she came up with the idea, might not be a bad idea to ask her to foot the bill. Ask her to get the new 80Gb with Dualshock - who needs BC when you can play PS3 games!

LOL - Bluray is an issue though :P

Quite the opposite. :p

Well I could keep my GF busy without a console! :D She WAS, and still IS my console and consoling partner.
Anyway re Blu Ray, that is reaslly a technology investment. Good DVD's, Good sound, Good collections to be made (as hobby between you and GF)

Realy the PS3 is the best (Beyond... ummm .... never mind). You will enjoy the movies as well as gaming. Just do not buy her Sims, you may be sidelined.

See - I'd be able to us the PS3 and my GF busy at the same time... you just need to be creative.

I want bluray for a reason - saves me paying R1300 for a ROM for my media center, and she gets the PS3. . .

She won't be into the Sims - probably fall asleep. Prefers the games I'd like :p...

So - the PS4 40GB above a goodbye then?

Out of interest, what is the HDD in consoles used for?
