Please help a Mac noob with some basic questions

Regarding your question #3, yes you can sort the files alphabetically but you cannot get folders to stay at the top.

To Pot and DrZoid

This was killing me too having moved over from Linux - I used to Arrange By Kind, but that still left .avi's and flv's etc. above folders.
I've found a way to fix it though (manual hack but very simple)

1. Open your Finder, and select your Hard-drive from the left-hand sidebar (add it in sidebar settings if it isn't there by default)
2. Navigate through System>Library>Core Services
3. Right-click on Finder (or Finder.app) and select Show Package Contents
4. Navigate through Contents>Resources>English.lproj
5. Right-click on InfoPlist.strings and Open With>Other>TextEdit
6. Where you see "Folder" = "Folder"; (a few lines from the top), just add a space before the second folder, so it should then read "Folder" = " Folder";
7. Follow this step word for word - it's the only place you can really go wrong and not know why. Click File>Save As>Uncheck "Hide Extension" AND uncheck "If no extension is provided, use .txt"
8. Change the filename and extension to: InfoPlist.strings (you'll probably just have to change the extension but make sure it's all correct)...make sure again that it isn't appending a .txt
9. Save the file to your Desktop.
10. Copy Paste or Drag n Drop the file into the original English.lproj folder that you had open in the finder.
11. Instead of rebooting for the change to take effect, just hold Cntrl, alt(option) and click the Finder in your dock, then select Relaunch.
12. Make sure your Finder is set to Arrange by: Kind.

Your life is now complete :)
