Please help me understand VPN Connections on a Router

Hi,

I can't get my head around this. I would appreciate some guru to explain this to me.

I have 1 router. I have a PPPoE connection to WebAfrica on my router. I have a TP-link TL-WR941ND.

I setup my router as anyone in SA would. now I want to use Express VPN for privacy but can't figure out how to use it. Express VPN setup instructions state that I need to change my connection type to L2TP but that breaks my ISP connection.

What am I missing? Please go easy on a simpleton...

You need to establish an L2TP connection over your ISP connection. IE, ISP connection doesn't change. This is an additional connection over and above your ISP connection. Does your router support L2TP vpns?

Thank you for replying to quickly. I have no idea if it supports it. How do I check that? ugh ... sorry for being stupid...
 
From a quick look, your router won't work as a VPN client - so you'll need to set up VPN on your PC instead (but that will only protect the PC)

that sux big time :-( I want to protect my entire network....ill have to get a better router. Thank you Sinbad :) Really appreciate the prompt responses.

I'm curious. You trust a company called ExpressVPN who is under no obligation to protect any of your information more than a local ISP who is legally required to abide by South African privacy laws?

You realise that the "naughty people" could include the VPN provider themselves who are able to see everything you do when connected to their VPN?

I didn't come here to pick fights, I came here to ask a question to expand my understanding of why people choose to give random companies on the internet access to all their traffic.

@Sinbad, looks like those settings are just not available in my model. it also speaks of router B and router A probably expecting you to have multiple routers.

Thanks again....I'll research better routers and see what I can get :)

They're talking about establishing a site to site vpn using L2TP.
Router A would essentially be the expressvpn server.
