HTPC/gaming rig, connected via GFX (DVI->HDMI cable) to 42" LCD HDTV. Win 7 Ultimate x64.

When turning on, about 40% of the time, the fans just go at max speed, and monitor never comes on. Other 60%, there's that initial loudness, then things settle down and all is OK.

When running, after no set time duration, the PC suddenly freezes. The screen stays on, with whatever picture was on there, stuck there.

Need to hit reset to get it out of this state, after which there's a 60% chance of getting back to Windows. Sometimes, only way back is to hold down power button.

Is this symptomatic of bad RAM? HDD? Loose connection somewhere?

I have checked all HDD for errors, and defragged.
Have left memtest to run a long way past 100% with no errors.
PSU is decent- 500W or something (will update when home)
-- has a 3870HD
-- 2x2GB average RAM
-- 3-4 HDD
Nothing that should strain an average PSU.

So, what should I test next? Particular components, or a different OS? I have a Live CD lying around…

Any other ideas? I'll reseat components and cables as a last resort- it's a mission to get into this case...

TIA :)

Try a different PSU.

Might be that. Symptoms sounds like it's a wonky PSU.

Also, whilst having the case open, check for any swollen caps on the motherboard :

Cool. Any way to test a psu otherwise? Can borrow one to test, but won't give mine in exchange until I can rule it out...

Not keen to shell out for a new mobo :(
