Please help with buying gaming PC!

I'm trying to place the order for my PC but the idiot salesman I'm dealing with keeps trying to slip in one of those 500gig Seagate 7200.11's with the faulty firmware instead of the Western Digital I keep trying to order. Seriously, any dealers on this forum, don't take your customers for idiots. I know that those things are probably as easy to shift as dead albatrosses but send them back to Seagate for a refund, don't try to shovel them off on me unless it is a three for the price of none type deal.

BrendanD: I recently bought a 1TB Seagate 7200.11 sata from Esquire. The stock they got is not the one affected with faulty firmware. Just to be sure, i used the Seagate Online utility (http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207931) to check if it was a faulty drive, and it wasn't to my relief. Buy Seagate from Esquire if you can't get a Western Digital drive.

what do you guys think of the 9800GTX or sumin like that?

The 9800GTX+ is a really good performing card. Its what I bought recently and it performs really well. With the new Nvidia drivers, it's supposed to perform 20% better than before.

In my experience customer service in South Africa is so poor that I'd rather decrease the risk of having to return something faulty.

To that end I'd just prefer to avoid the model. There is no way that I know of to determine whether the drive is of the faulty batch without buying it first. If I can avoid the possibility of purchasing something with a known defect I will, especially if it is as easy as buying another make.

The supplier should be able to tell from the serial number which batch was faulty. The problem is, as you say, that they simply don't care. I had a problem this week with a particular batch of sound card that was faulty. The supplier initially told me that I can only get the serial number when the device is dispatched; basically they wanted me to buy it, find out its broken and then return it??? Crazy, rather don't take the risk and just buy another brand....

There is, these are the potentially affected drives - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=2468528&postcount=1

But I agree with the rest of your post.

I have the Q9400 and it's a nice CPU. Buy the box kit which comes with a cooler. I suggest using thermal paste since the black strips on my cooler didn't work very well.

Which motherboard did you decide on?

I would get a CPU cooler if you can just because it's such an easy way to make your rig look cool. Perhaps a GeminII or so would be nice. Plus when you start to overclock - and you will with that mobo - it's invaluable to have a good cooler.

Corrected. ;)

i agree. i have same mobo with q9550 and a coolermaster v8 cpu cooler. really looks like a large v8 engine block with cool led's:D. i haven't tried oc'ing yet but good to know there is potential.

Quite honestly I don't see the point in getting a massive expensive 3rd party cooler when you're not even going to OC, cos the stock cooler will cope just fine with stock clocks.
Maybe someone can explain it to me..
