Luckily in Bloem we'll never have the problem that some people in Gauteng / Durban or Cape Town have, which is over subscription of the service on certain towers.

Well something has happened to the tower I am connecting to : I am not getting anything more than 20 Mbit download speed but my upload speed is now more than the normal 3-6 Mbit, sometimes even more than my download speed?

It's difficult to say Piet. A lot of factors can attribute to the inconsistency of the speed you're getting. Not sure what all those factors could be, but that's the reality of an LTE connection I'm afraid :(

I have also been struggling with my telkom LTE since December. It was very stable for several years, but now it has become almost unusable at times. Luckily I am not on contract anymore, just waiting for my fibre to be installed.

Guys the only way to deduce what's going on is to take ur LTE router to another location and test.. That way u can figure out if its a tower issue, defect router or sim issue..

Use telkoms LTE tracker site and see which other location is further away, not close by or next tower..

Post ur findings.. Im in durban and there's 2 towers that I can connect to and have never had speed issues for longer than a day

Please tell me more about Telkom's LTE tracker site

For a temporary solution if you use Google Chrome, install TouchVPN. Once installed - click the icon on the top right of your browser and then click connect. All sites should be accessible.

Lets hope Telkom fixes their issues soon - but for now, this solution works.

I once noticed that their DNS server(s) went down. I put in Google's DNS servers on my router, and it solved the problem permanently (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).

The other problem is that Telkom keeps on adding people to its network without checking whether certain areas are overloaded. For each person added to an area, the less bandwidth is available for the previously population. This is called contention ratio. My LTE speed has also been up and down over the past year and a bit. Some times it's at 3 to 5 Mbps (7-9pm), sometimes it's at 45 Mbps (before 6am). Clearly it has to do with the number of users connected to the base station.
