Plex issues with MKV

Hi Guys, having major issues with Plex not supporting MKV files to stream to my Samsung. I guess best bet is to convert them to .MP4 files. Is there a good free to use video converter out there to download. I have tried a few of the free versions, but they are very very slow, or have Malware (Handbrake for instance).

Thanks

What type of problem is it giving? Is it just not playing at all or does it play then stop?

Mkv is a container, not a format. It is possible the video codec used within the mkv container is newer than the TV or your plex transcoder.

You will need to re-encode the video yes. Use an open-souce encoder like xmediarecode, dont get yourself one of the "free" ones... they're all shyte.

Your TV/plex should be compatible with x264 as the video codec and MP3 or AAC as the audio codec.

Cut plex and just use Kodi.

Honestly I can't understand why people think they need plex. It's retarded.

Because not a single device I have supports it. As much as people like to think Kodi is "open" it's only as open as long as you want to connect a PC to everything.

It's also very much a "stand alone" system unless you want to hackjob central MySQL into it. Unless that had changed in recent times?

Kodi is on android so if you have smart TV you can run it on there. I have had Kodi on a Pi 1/2/3 and a couple of smart TVs and andorid TV boxes. So no. You are wrong.

What is wrong with a stand alone system? I mean, you watch your stuff on your TV and that's that?

@ Camikaze, it recognizes some MKV's, not all, then jut cant see the episode in Plex.

@ Agentrfr , Ok, thanks. Will look at purchasing one then

@ Sauron , I connect to Plex from my Samsung, yes. I have tried the Optimizer, it doesnt work for everything. Maybe there are some settings. Will dig unto the Plex forums over the weekend.

And that doesn't work for everyone...

I have...

1 Samsung Smart TV - Non-Android with Plex App.
1 Samsung Old TV + Apple TV 4 with Plex App
2 x iPads with Plex
2 x iPhones with Plex (rarely used but still)
2 x Laptops that could run Kodi...but why.

And a Microserver sitting in the kitchen cupboard running Plex Server. It's painless and brilliant, absolutely no reason for Kodi in my life as it would simply complicate everything.

Not to mention if I really wanted to I could watch/listen to all my stuff remotely and so can my entire family.

What do you mean it doesn't work? Does it fail? Or are the results not as expected?

I use the Media Optimizer constantly for everything as the Microserver is now too pap to live transcode.

When I run them through the optimizer, it will do the "conversion", but the file will still not be picked up by Plex.

+1

My setup

1 Samsung Smart TV with Plex App
1 LG non smart TV + Samsung BD player with Plex App
1 Apple Mac using Plex on Safari
2 Windows Phones with Plex App - Mainly for streaming of music.
1 Windows tablet with Plex app
1 Laptop running Plex Server

Ability to seamlessly access all content off-site on all my mobile devices. Mainly used for music streaming but have watched a few tv shows when not at home.
My server is also shared with one other family member not living with us, who can access my library from anywhere.

Everything is automated including my pics and videos taken by me or my wife on our mobile devices. My wife takes a pic on her phone that syncs to OneDrive. My Plex monitors both our OneDrive folders and adds the files to the library.

Never had a problem with any MKV file, ever.

Setup:
1 LG TV (LM6710) where I use "Media Link" the built-in app or go straight to the series folder when selecting "Source".
1 on Note 3 and a Xioami phone.
