Plex Thread

okay....i can start.
been running plex for a while now and its going well but couldn't really get a clear answer if AMD gpu can do transcoding.
right now, i am still struggling to do a gpu passthrough to a vm so can't really test it.

I have mini SFF computer with ryzen 5, and vega 8 embedded GPU.
also personally i prefer the jellyfin project (that i believe can do AMD gpu transcoding) but to make it easy for my users i decided to stick with plex, and even got the plex pass.
however i will definately get a jellyfin instant up and running soon.

No i think have pay gpu to transcode, I have rx 550 in for years on windows machine directly never gets used.

I use i3 7100T as cpu hardly works, due to having HEVC 10bit hardware encoding.

I believe it's Plex Pass only and Nvidia specifically (possibly Intel).

But why transcode at all? Just Direct Stream.

Plex is a nifty piece of software but one that can ravish resources too. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with it. Tried EMBY as an alternative for a good year or so, but in the end went back to Plex.

Plex transcoder converting files for viewing on a remote connection resulted in close to 100% CPU usage, which is nuts!! I use Process Lasso to limit the cores in use to 2 out of 8...

I direct steam for sure, but some of my friends transcode.

Emby for the win. Plex has been adding so much lately.

Plex works well, however i picked up some inconsistencies on their front end apps.

Samsung TV app works 100%
Android TV app (LIT Box, no updates outstanding) - had issues with sound during play back of the same title which worked 100% on the Samsung TV app

Just to test, tried on web, title played fine.

Not a major issue. Enjoying using plex.

I've also been using Plex for a while now, for the last 3 or so years I've been using a Nvidia Shield Pro as my Plex Server. I'm using a Raspberry Pi as my file server, which also does all my downloading and such, and everything's been working pretty well, haven't had issues at all. I also like having my library available whenever I'm not at home, works really well too.

Anyone else bummed about the direction Plex is going or is it just me?

I have been an HTPC style user for over a decade, ie.: my Mac Mini is plugged into my TV, it runs Plex server and client and serves data to all the devices in the home as well as one or two mates who stream remotely from time to time.

Since the release of Plex Media Player things have gone downhill. PMP wouldn't speak to my DAC, that was weird since they released TIDAL integration soon after - so now you can stream lossless audio but you have to play it back through a headphone jack??

Subjective but I never liked the move away from the Deck view, it just worked so well. So I have been using the community supported OpenPHT for several years (while still paying for Plex Pass.)

Lately they seem focused on the web client and being more like Netflix in general which seems like an absolutely stupid idea, why move away from your USP and try to mimic an industry titan in a space that is already very full but ok... the issue is that as a very long term user I feel a bit jilted that as far as Plex is concerned 'desktop' seems to all but over :(

Que? They backtracked on that... https://forums.plex.tv/t/killing-pmp/446526/826?u=5stringdeath

On my parent's TV had similar with the LIT box and it related to when there was a 5.1 soundtrack in the file. Needed to either enable or disable passthrough as I recall.

Not a Plex problem as such, but a hardware one.

The answer: On Windows (and Mac) yes, but not any other platforms. If you plan on doing transcoding I would recommend a relatively modern Intel CPU.

Transcoding is bursty. It'll use all the CPU until its built up enough of a buffer and then it'll throttle down until it needs to transcode more.

The Plex app on my LG TV is not the best. Cannot skip forward through a video.
Rather been using XPlay to connect to Plex server for years now. Also has a better interface IMO.

Also happy with my plex, using it in docker with Intel CPU for transcoding. I'm using another docker container to connect my sonarr and radarr to plex, it helps reduce file scan/library adding time for plex, (Linky)
