Plugg Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Morning,

Just a quick note to let you know that IS experienced another DOS attack this morning aimed at a DSL subscriber for about 45 minutes. The system contained the attack although it might have slowed things slightly down for other users.

Traffic levels are back to normal again.

Ah, thanks for the update. Thought I was going a bit crazy with certain sites not loading at all.

I'm curious (and uninformed! :D), is it normal for a DOS attack to target a single DSL subscriber? I would have thought it would occur on a much larger scale.

It happens.

We have had a few times now where they targeted a dsl IP that 9/10 times p*ssed somebody off out there in Cyberspace.

Now if everybody can just play nicely together in the playpen ... ;-)

My problem is I can only download during the day as my PC needs to be switched off when I go to sleep...

EDIT:I cannot seem to find any concrete information about this "Star Rating". Does it reset every month? Is it basically automated speed percentage throttling? Basically, what are the details of how it currently works?
EDIT2: ok read back a bit in the thread, so 10 day rolling period as in complete reset every 10 days? MWEB apparently has a 30 day rolling period but that was proven to be inaccurate as where I was throttled on the 15th last month they already throttled me today.

Internet Solutions makes use of a rolling ten day window to determine your account status based on your usage. The rolling window is always today plus usage of the previous ten days; there are no specific days. Rolling ten days.

Have a read through this old posting of mine - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...DSL-Feedback?p=9892036&viewfull=1#post9892036

OK... much more sane than what mweb decided to do out of the blue.
Regarding the plugg news server, what is the local retention (i.e. 8d or 10d) and how many connections?

May I add another suggestion Janitor:

That we also have an opportunity to reset our star rating back to 5 stars after being naughty and don't want to wait for it to correct itself by investing a penalty fee? Different fee for different stars?

Thanks,

Wingnut

Won't that just tempt them to make stars easier to loose?

Hi Janitor

Hope you had a nice weekend

Can you please provide me with information as to the current load on the network?

Trying to pull a file down via NNTP and Im getting 70KB/sec. 4mb uncapped, 8mb line speed, 4 stars

edit : I just switched to an IS capped unshaped account. Full line speed, 800KB/sec

:erm:

I understand the dynamic shaping etc etc but this is now becoming an issue for me. In the past, I have NEVER had an issue where I needed to pull the odd NNTP file during the day. While I dont expect full line speed, I do expect something reasonable. I await your feedback

Heh you didn't wait very long. That said, you really expect to be able to download on uncapped accounts during the day, even on 4 stars?

Then again, that speed sounds like what I get on a 1 star other IS-based ISP account.

Had a look at the current network usage and it is not busier than normal. p2p and nntp receives the lowest priority of all other protocols, especially during business hours and as you pointed out, per gig account isn't subject to shaping.

Due to my janitorial duties, I do not sit and watch social media platforms all day long, but you are welcome to email me if you need my attention or log a call with support. I browse the forums where and when possible.

So it seems then that NNTP performance is a good indicator of how close the IPC is to getting maxed out as that although I never downloaded during the day, sometimes when I got home early and either just tested NNTP or wanted that 350MB file in 15mins and NNTP would run full speed a while back, now I get 50-70k like techead says, so I don't even bother, and wait for 5pm.

+1
From the time which I started , 6 months ago , until now I can see a remarkable deterioration of the network .
