I've found that it's far more efficient to send an email detailing the issue, and then call 5 min later. What you probably find is that emails pile up, and while they try to deal with them the phone is going off the hook... So the emails take second preference. That's how I see it

One day later and still no reply... Haha I don't think anyone has ever gotten a reply from support through the ticket system. I've always deleted them before they reply because I've gotten the answer elsewhere. Plugg isn't a bad ISP but I still think the support and their support turn-around time isn't up to scratch.

I usually use WA's Cape Town server. I also use IS' Johannesburg server if WA is slow. MWEB is always very slow for me.
The WA server is also faster for MWEB customers according to a friend of mine

Thanks - specifically want to know since Plugg is 'consumer IS' should I be using the IS Jhb server or one of the other ISP's steam server for best results (especially for the initial download of games)

You guys should just double check, but I don't think there are any Steam content servers left in SA.

I also know that Steam is getting rid of the steam content server model, and instead switching over to make use of regular CDNs (content delivery networks). Now I am not sure who they are using, but I am guessing it is Akamai. ISPs still have the option of running reverse squid proxies for Steam, but if Akamai is indeed the CDN they use, there isn't really a point in doing so.

Hi Guys
Anyone else having connection drops? It goes off every few minutes and not long enough to change accounts to test.
EDIT:Tested another account when it happened again and it works on AH account.
EDIT2:Its happening every 5mins on plugg account.

Same here - called the help desk was told they would get back to me but no one called back.
My connection disconnects 3-4 times during the day and every day at around 1am.
Tested with a telkom account for 2 days and no issues
Also the shaping seems pretty bad nowdays
Unless there is a PoD issued, Plugg is not able to cause your connection just to just drop.
PoD is usually issued when (and this is just quickly off the top of my head)
- accounts are suspended;
- accounts scheduled to be deleted at the end of the month;
- accounts are immediately deleted;
- serious abuse related issues;
- reseller / user requested;
Since SAIX provides a disconnect cause in the accounting stop packets, it is easily enough to see why a particular session disconnected.
If you know when abouts, drop me an email and I can pull the relevant logs.
If the server is sitting on Internet Solutions' backbone, I would imagine that is the one you need to select. I do not play games, but will ask IS' gaming department for an answer.
Spoke to Mr Gaming @ IS and his feedback is that nobody in South Africa hosts any steam content servers. Apparently Valve did away with the servers and moved to CDNs, (as per Tinuva's response earlier) and using the selection box in Steam no longer functions in any event. IS do however host Akamai CDNs on their network.
Valve still need to remove the various ISPs from the steam download list though, but if you look on http://store.steampowered.com/stats/content/ as Tinuva pointed out, South Africa is no longer listed.

So it would be a good idea then to select IS (JHB) from the drop down in Steam? Or we saying that it makes zero difference at all?
My understanding is the latter. Steam would default to whichever CDN server is the closest and available at the time of connect.

Yeah it makes no difference what you select. Akamai will redirect you based on 2 methods. First, it is based on the DNS servers you are using, so best is to use the DNS servers assigned automatically by your ISP, as those DNS servers will automatically send the initial request to the closest Akamai cluster.
Now if you did lets say use Google DNS 8.8.8.8 which sits in London, your initial request will go there, and then that Akamai cluster will decide if it should serve you the request or rather redirect you to a closer Akamai cluster.
I prefer using the ISP's DNS servers, that way you know from the get go you should get your download from the closest Akamai cluster. Akamai will redirect it to the second closest Akamai cluster, if the closest one is too busy, or too slow or both. Which is why the ISP's DNS servers are the best choice to ensure you get the fastest possible Steam downloads now.
