Hi all,
Unfortunately the sectors proved to be underpowered to reach the section of town we were planning on getting, so we are now in the process of putting together funds for 2x 18db Flat panels.
We are still trying to aquire additional highsites throughout town, but have proved quite rediculous. A single person wanted R10000/m to put up 2x Sectors in the middle of town. It would be PERFECT place to put the sectors, but to warrant the funds, its impossible. Seeing most people don't really care for free, or community effort. Just mere "how much can I make?" attitudes.
We can get a highsite in Eastwood for about R500 per month, so thats an advantage, but the main concern is to get a highsite in worldsview. that would allow most people to get access to the network.
The other problem we are having is backbone links. We are just waiting for Uniterm to get the new WRT55AG units in, so that we can set all our backbone links to 5.8GHz.
It basically comes down to funding at this moment, as we need to fork out for the equipment we'll put up. End of the month is coming up so we'll be reviewing the budget again.
For those keeping an eye out, drop me an email so I can add you to the list.
As for the website, sorry, theres nothing interesting developing just yet. The only cool thing at the moment is the PAWUG firmware that is based on OpenWRT. Once a kit is connected to a SSID, it acquires an IP address via DHCP on the main network (which is a /21 subnet) and then it broadcasts using OLSR what IP address(es) are on its ethernet port (being a /30, /29, /28, /27, /26, /25, /24 and so on) to all other OLSR units and basically establishes a multitude of routes to the new node. The DHCP concept allows people with straight bridges (like SENAO) to also connect without purchasing additional equipment.
the other thing we have been doing is encouraging people that want to connect to setup their own private WUG for surrounding people and once PAWUG has coverage, all that is needed is an uplink to PAWUG highsites.
Will keep you guys posted.
Thanks
