Poll: Best/Recommended Linux Desktop Environment

KDE 3.5.9 - Why? Because everything works and the last time I upgraded it went very pear shaped. I don't use gnome for the same reason I cross the street when I see a Mac Fanboi....

Distro is mandriva, works nicely for oldschool games like Q3 and War3:dota online.

Always loved KDE until version KDE4 came along. Good grief always has some bugs and feels incomplete. (Wait it is)

Therefore I was forced to move over to Gnome and I am quite happy with that. If KDE ever reaches what KDE 3.5.x reached then perhaps I might use it again.

Until then it is Gnome all the way!

Gnome ... its simpler to use ... Tried KDE and also had to search and search for stuff. That said, some of the apps in KDE (like Kmail) are pretty decent.

I have to disagree. KDE FTW! The gnome menu is not structured as well as the KDE menu, i can never find anything. In KDE if you want Kaffeine you just to Multimedia. Simple as that. KDE4 on the other hand:confused:

I like the little black and grey text at startup. That is the greatest desktop environment ever!!!

@chiskop: I think it is pretty obvious what I am implying. :P The reason for this is @ work, the ubuntu fan boys have all made their gnome desktops look like Mac OS. So I figure they're all the same. :P

/me puts his back to the wall!!!

Finding KDE4.2 quite good. E17 another I quite like. Recently installed Fluxbox but haven't had the time to try it out yet.

Using a tip I found in Ubuntu Kung Fu, my version of Ubuntu looks like Windows with a start menu :)
So gnome no longer looks like gnome, rather it now looks more familiar.
Some great tips in that book.

Okay, let me have a go at this as well.

CLi, nothing more, nothing less. Desktop manager, tsk, tsk, tsk, for people to lazy to mkdir, mv, cp and rm. Wallpaper? Nothing some fancy ASCII can't fix. Vim, mplayer, mp3blaster and lynx2. What more can you want?

Seriously, I have stuck with KDE even through the disastrous initial KDE 4 release, and it is not half bad in 4.2, I have high hopes for it. I can see that the devs really spend some time making it future proof, and come a year or two some of the features that are now gimmicks are going to be essential for the Desktop environment.

I still hate Gnome, end.

Looking past the fact that there are only a handful of DE's, I'll mention the following WM's as some of my favourites as well:
E17, fluxbox, TWM

EDIT:
If you want to try out some new WM or DE, here is a comprehensive list of the ones you can try out:
http://xwinman.org/

gnome on my ubuntu boxen (let's keep the crap all in the same area :D)
KDE3.5 on my home PCs
xfce on my pet project. Making an old P2 useful again.

I run both KDE4.1 and Gnome. KDE looks better but Gnome works better... (similar to the Vista Aero vs XP: Vista smaaks lekker and XP actually works).

Has anyone here tried Xmonad?

I looked into it, but I'm not exactly able to program in Haskell, so I gave up...

Gnome, but with Gnome SLAB replacing the default menu (sort of like in Mint). Much better than KDE in my opinion. (I've only tried it once by the way).
