Polo 1.4 Base Hatch (55kw)

If I only had a choice between the Citi and Vivo then I'd rather be in a Vivo...

Vivo has a solid safety rating, albeit older tech, it's German for one (That usually counts for something :P). Vivo is just a little pricey for something that is a bit outdated. Good car nonetheless, and I'd take that over the Fiesta.

You'd take a Vivo over a Fiesta?? The Vivo is a budget, price cut, bargain basement hatch built for the unwashed masses, whilst the Fiesta is at least a proper small hatch with some creature comforts and an attempt to keep NVH levels civilised.

Guys, you realise this argument will NEVER be won, right?

In any case, go and compare the safety features of the Vivo GT and the Fiesta Ambeinte, and then come back tell us again how the Fiesta is safer than the Vivo, because that's ultimately what the argument was about, yes?

I agree, the Vivo just looks plain ugly compared to the Fiesta, but I don't for a second think it's a lesser car. On the contrary, price-wise, you are bound to get more car for your money on at the VW dealer.

Anyways, my 2c.

They have the same safety "features". As in dual airbags and ABS, etc.

BUT:

VS

The Polo (non-Vivo) gets 4 stars and that's in the pre-2009 tests. Also, then you better hope everything that makes the Polo "safe" in a crash test made it onto the Vivo.

Also, it's not only the safety aspects that matter. For instance the Fiesta comes standard with controls on the steering wheel, etc. You can't even begin to compare cabin quality, fit and finish and NVH levels. The Fiesta does feel like a little big car. Quiet and refined. The Vivo is tinny and it does feel decidedly cut price.

There's a R5k difference between a Vivo 1.6GT 5 door and a Fiesta 1.4 Ambiente. There's only a 3kW difference between the 1.4 and the 1.6. Having driven the 1.4, I'd have the Fiesta every time.

Funny thing is of the 4 German brands we have in SA 3 build their cars locally and only one imports cars built in Germany. I can vouch for the quality of German built cars...
You do have a point roux but vwsa manufactures the vivo for the SA market and it is not meant for export. The vehicles they do manufacture for export have to adhere to stringent requirements. Abs and airbags are not even standard in SA. If the vivo is great, why isnt it being exported to emerging countries?

Most emerging markets make far cheaper (and worse) cars than ours.

I don't think there is a market for the Vivo in the saturated crap car segment in emerging economies overseas.

The amount of fail in this thread especially the arguments that have been disproved before.

The emerging markets do make cheaper cars but not all of them are worse. Mitsubishi_Mirage_in_Tokyo_Motor_Show_2011_2.jpg2012-suzuki-splash-facelift-photos_4.jpg

You'll see anecdotes like those pop up every now and again, and the simple answer tends to be that airbags have a higher threshold to deploy than what people tend to expect. The electronics governing their function are quite simple, and are decidedly unlikely to malfunction. Also, the Mirage licks balls.

Speaking of Mitsu, why would suggesting a Lancer be a bad idea for the OP, besides the crappy fuel consumption if driven hard and the odd tyre sizes?

There are some good deals on them out there...

I'm also looking for a car.. I've never looked at the Astra coz I assumed they r expensive. Can I get a 2011 or more recent model with 100k?
Only Astra you will get for that money is the Astra-H like I got. Astra-J probably starts at R140k but the milage will be high. Corsa-D is a good option at R100k unless you find a low milage Astra-H like I did.

Avoid high milage Opels.

Update:

I got the Vivo 1.4, picked it up yesterday, and so far I am happy, 60,000km on the clock but it seems the previous owner took very good care of it and it has just been serviced, the little 1.4 motor picks up nicely, did a whole lot of driving between Fourways and Sandton, the clutch feels much better than the one in the 2014 Hyundai Accent 1.6 I was driving, brakes are sharp and it has new tires.

I was happy to find that it has BT hands free radio package, also takes SD card plus Aux and it connects to my Note 4 without hassle, so I can play music and take calls without fiddling with my phone, overall I am happy with my choice.

All I need now is tinted windows and decent 16inch mags, but I'll do the mags at a much later stage, its serving purpose just fine as is for now. :)

Thanks a lot guys!

You are correct. The model we have is produced in india but with added airbags..http://www.iol.co.za/motoring/industry-news/datsun-go-fails-crash-test-dismally-1.1776213

I still wouldnt go for that 1.2 model. Some manufacturers seem to be importing cars for the indian and latin americn market. These countries produce cheap cars and not safe ones.I think there are some exceptions i.e hyundai but the likes of fiat palio,figo,1.2 swift, datsun and tata try to meet very basic safety requirements. The safety requirements for this country are a joke.I think that ABS should be standard.I would rather buy a slightly older fiesta that has safety features and r&d invested in it,than buy the likes of a vivo, figo, palio etc.

What car doesn't have ABS in this conversation?

I was commenting on the safety standards in south africa and not a specific car. Abs isnt mandatory in this country. View attachment 176899View attachment 176901

You didn't use the word mandatory, you said standard which implies something altogether different.

But I do agree, it should be.

Also never trust that website for specs, they are often wrong.

It would cost them more to make ABS an option on the Vivo than just fitting it. So it's a standard feature, as it was on the Polo it's based on.

As I recall the Polo has had ABS and EBD since it was called a Polo locally. Golf had it since the Golf 3.

The only cars possibly dodging standard ABS would be the Chinese and Indian designed and manufactured ones.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1419172887.527171.jpg

Yea i know that site isnt a 100% but remembered reading an article about the vivo having abs as an option, when it was launched. Vwsa later included abs as standard after the koreans started producing good cars. The op bought a 2011 model and u screen grabbed the current vivo. I do agree that one can do worse than a vivo but i would like to see it subjected to a ncap test.
