Interesting question from a mate of mine, an ex-provincial player...

Slightly edited:

Your thoughts?
Mainly laziness I guess. People would rather sit on the coach with a braai stewing outside than make a day of it and go to the match.

I could be way of the mark here, but I was under the impression that in Australia the games arent' broadcast live in the host cities.

So if it's a test in Melborne, people in Melbourne can't watch on the television. Not sure if this is true though.
They did try that out... but discontinued it as it had no impact on crowd attendance.

Not really...it wasn't a 'try out', it was actually the agreement with Ch 9 in past because it did affect attendances then. If you wanted coverage, you could still get another UHF antenna and pick up the regional Ch 9 stations such as Wollongong, which I did.
With bidding between stations massively increasing the value of TV coverage and the attendances picking up plus the ticket prices then going up in response, it was then better value for them to sell total coverage, which has been the case the last 12 yrs or so.

Better TV coverage! Almost nobody wants to pay +R600 just to watch cricket on ****sport2.

I got tired of supporting SA cricket. Theres only so many times you can watch them choke. These days I prefer to focus on the womans beach volleyball team.

Anyways, dont only DSTV people still watch SA cricket?

Supersport 2
17:45 - 21:30 > Cricket - Ram Slam T20 Challenge: Chevrolet Warriors v Chevrolet Knights

I wish they'd only play day matches at Buffalo Park. Every time someone farts the lights go out. :(

I'm going for tomorrow's Titans vs Cobras match at Supersport Park. Haven't been there in a while.

Aus GDP per capita $44,000 vs. RSA $11,000. That's one major reason.

And a beer at the ashes cost between $8 and $10. I was at the WACA for the third test this year.

The overlapping of the traditional local summer and winter sport due to commercialisation causes folks to choose between cricket and rugby (for example). Gone are the days where a sportsman could play provincial rugby/ soccer/ hockey and cricket. So could the problem be that there is too much sport?
I'd say it's over exposure too sport in general.

Benson and Hedges domestic games used too full stadiums during isolation

That doesn't explain why the Aussies have such higher viewership compared to ours. They have the exact same sports and many many others.

The economic comparison is hard to relate...if you just looked at SA's middle class then there is not as big a difference as simply GDP, however our tickets are way way more expensive- think about $400 for sitting way back at a rock concert, paying $10 a beer or soft drink ...it is a much bigger chunk of salary.

Not all tickets are that expensive, we were at the Taylor Swift concert in Perth and our tickets were $69. (yes yes, Taylor Swift, get it out of your systems :D)

Yep, can't help but think the only reason we are NR 1 on tests is because it doesn't have a world-cup. No do-or-die (win-or-choke) matches.

Conclusion:

South African "supporters" are apathetic, lazy and tightwads.

Yes, as evidenced in sold out rugby and soccer stadiums.
Where?

There were many S14 games last year where the stadiums were half-empty.

The only sold out soccer games are the major derbies or Cup finals where half the tickets are given away for free by the sponsors.

But this thread was mainly about cricket...

Okay, Ill take your word on it. In all honesty if I watch 3 rugby games in a year thats a lot. I guess theyre normally the important ones hence why theyre sold out.

My mate (on the OP) did make the comparison to the sold out Boks' games. Every time!
