Pope Benedict 'Resigns' - Reports

Who wrote the speech? That's an important question.

A speech writer. This is the pope w're talking about, he surely does not write his own speeches.

Which does not imply he does not understand or speak Latin.

It's impressive that those listening knew wtf he was saying !

Why? These people have spent years learning the language.

I thought only God can resign the pope.

That’s what I thought. I suppose there isn’t a point in having someone in office who can’t do the job. Oh wait... that happens most of the time in South African government

So strange to have a Pope resign... thats like hearing of a President resign. It almost never happens. The last time a Pope resigned was in the 1400`s.

They still speak Latin? I thought was done away with in the last of the series of Asterix?

Seriously though, I would have thought it would be Italian, German or some other local language. Never to old to learn new things, I say.

Thabo Mbeki resigned, didn't he? No wait, he was recalled. Sorry. My bad. :o

The Holy See (Latin: Sancta Sedes, Italian: Santa Sede) is the episcopal jurisdiction of the Catholic Church in Rome. The primacy of Rome makes its bishop the worldwide leader of the church, commonly known as the Pope. Since Rome is the preeminent episcopal see of the Church, it contains the central government of the church, including various agencies essential to administration. Diplomatically, the Holy See acts and speaks for the whole Roman Catholic Church. It is also recognized by other subjects of international law as a sovereign entity, headed by the Pope, with which diplomatic relations can be maintained."[1]

On its official website Vatican City uses Italian, English, French, German, and Spanish, but not Latin or Portuguese, which are found on the official website of the Holy See.

Many languages are used within the state. For instance, recruits to the Pontifical Swiss Guard take their oath in the language of the canton to which they belong: German, French or Italian.[2] And the Holy See's semi-official newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano is published in Italian, English, French, German, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish. A Malayalam edition was added in July 2008.[3]

The Holy See itself mainly uses Latin for its most important official documents, which are published in the Acta Apostolicae Sedis.
