Pope Benedict 'Resigns' - Reports

So his last day as Pope is 28 Feb afaik ...................... and then Rome will be destroyed?

You probably also believed that Mayan calendar nonsense :)

It's about the next pope, not this one.

"In the extreme persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will sit [i.e., as bishop].
Peter the Roman, who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations:
and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed,
and the terrible judge will judge his people.
The End."

It's about the next pope, not this one.

Nope , it's about the current one. The current Pope is Benedict XVI. Daveza quoted this:
Benedict XVI, a pope described in the prophecy as "Peter the Roman", whose pontificate will end in the destruction of the city of Rome

It clearly says HIS pontificate will end in the destruction of Rome.

Yeah Dave messed up the quote badly :D

The Prophecy of the Popes, attributed to Saint Malachy, is a list of 112 short phrases in Latin. They purport to describe each of the Roman Catholic popes (along with a few anti-popes), beginning with Pope Celestine II (elected in 1143) and concluding with the successor of current pope Benedict XVI, a pope described in the prophecy as "Peter the Roman", whose pontificate will end in the destruction of the city of Rome.

It's the next pope.

I can just imagine the lobbying going on behind the scenes right now. There must be several candidates putting themselves forward to be the chosen one :D

One can then safely assume that PeterCH is in Rome.

For the record, here is his brief announcement, written personally:
Dear Brothers,

I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonisations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.

I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering.

However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.

From the Vatican, 10 February 2013

BENEDICTUS PP XVI

Little sidenote for Daveza: "bark" (sometimes barc or barque) as used in "bark of St Peter" means "ship of St Peter". The first pope, Peter, was a fisherman. Even today this term is also used to refer to a ship.

Live and learn, thanks.

Does it refer to the Vatican or the CC ?

When used by the Church, it refers specifically to the Catholic Church as that agency which under Peter's stewardship is to witness to the resurrection and make disciples of all nations.

When used by journalists: Who knows? So many make up anything they want.

As an aside, a resignation is what you hand to someone else. The pope is sovereign and has no higher authority in this world, so this is an abdication, not a resignation.

What's the bet someone's dug up dirt about him fiddling with kiddies and has blackmailed him into resigning?

He's busy creating a legacy for himself. Hundreds of years from now he will still be remembered as the first pope to resign after a 600-year streak.
