Software issue could cause EV motors to randomly shut down in 0.3% of cases
Porsche has recalled 43,000 Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo models worldwide after identifying a software fault that could shut the electric drivetrain down at random.
The recall notice, which applies to models produced prior to June 2021, has been issued to rectify a software malfunction within the power inverter, which essentially communicates between the powertrain control module and the motors themselves. In the UK, the notice applies to 4495 cars.
In a series of internal tests, Porsche found that the motors could shut down while in motion, although the brakes and steering remained in operation. In the event of a shutdown, the Taycan displays a message on the dashboard instructing the driver to manoeuvre the car to a safe space. A Porsche spokesperson estimated that if the issue occurred at motorway speeds, the driver would have around 90sec to reach the hard shoulder or a layby.
The car can be restarted after the issue occurs, said Porsche, meaning owners are unlikely to be left stranded at the roadside.
Porsche said there is no specific set of circumstances or conditions that can cause the issue and that it could occur at any speed. The firm registered an occurrence rate of 0.3% in its own tests and there have been no reports of customers harmed or their cars damaged as a result of the malfunction.
Owners have been invited to visit a Porsche dealership to have the software updated – an over-the-air update is not possible as the inverter must be recalibrated afterwards – with an approximate repair time of one hour quoted.

Leonberg-based tuners, Techart Automobildesign GmbH, know that with the advent of vehicle electrification comes the downfall of tuning houses ramping up the boost and slapping on some downpipes for a heap load more performance. Inevitably, some smart fellow will unlock the key to accessible performance tuning of electric cars, but until such time, brands like Techart – known for its wild Porsche modifications both visual and mechanical – will have to stick to shouty body kits and gaudy interiors for vehicles like the Taycan.
And so, Techart has announced its new Carbon Aerokit for Porsche’s electric game-changer. What they have presented is essentially a veritable shopping list of carbon treats for those who want to be seen… to be environmentally conscious. Available in a custom colour, body colour or matte/glossy carbon fibre, each of the products promises to match the high-quality standards one would expect from a 35-year-old premium tuning company.

For this latest round of updates, Porsche has left the Taycan’s styling intact, after all, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!
So, what’s changed on the Porsche Taycan?
However, when the updated 2022 Taycan eventually arrives in South Africa buyers will be able to choose from some truly vibrant colours via the optional Paint to Sample and Paint to Sample Plus palettes which offer no less than 65 colours including Rubystar, which you see in these images. Other colours include Acid Green, Moonlight Blue Metallic, Riviera Blue, Viola Metallic and the list goes on. This is in addition to the 17 standard colours.
Moving inside, perhaps the most notable change is an updated infotainment system which now includes Android Auto capability but note that it’s not yet wireless which is odd for a car that’s so technologically advanced. Porsche’s Voice Pilot voice recognition system has also been updated to better identify and act on instructions and the navigation system is also said to be more streamlined in calculating routes and now also features enhanced graphics.
As an option, the Taycan can also be equipped with Remote Park Assist. With this feature and used in conjunction with the Porsche Connect app, the Taycan can enter and exit a parking space without a driver and it’s also able to execute parallel parking manoeuvres.

The Paint to Sample option gives buyers a choice of 65 additional exterior colours, including some bright 1990s throwbacks such as Rubystar Red. Other options include Acid Green, Moonlight Blue Metallic and Viola Metallic.
Clients who want to get really personal can opt for Paint to Sample Plus, which allows almost complete freedom. Bring your sample and Porsche will make it happen, at a price.

A premium 'paint to sample plus' has also been added, allowing customers to submit their own desired colour to Porsche for a cost of £6228 and a minimum wait time of six months.
The model will also receive technological updates to its drivetrain, increasing real-world range in day-to-day use. “Extensive technological developments have been implemented to achieve this increase,” Porsche said. “In Normal and Range modes, the front electric motor is almost completely decoupled and de-energised in the partial load range in the all-wheel drive models.

As you may have noticed, the Porsche Taycan depicted here sports a rather boisterous colour finish. This is just one of the highly colourful paint finishes that have been added to range. Porsche says that these eye-catching colours are now making a comeback with its consumers.
As part of the continually developing personalisation strategy of Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, the electric sedan and wagon is now available with ‘Paint to Sample’ and ‘Paint to Sample Plus’ in addition to 17 standard paint colours. The first option allows painting with 65 additional colours, at present. This includes the Moonlight Blue Metallic, Acid Green, Rubystar Red, Riviera Blue and Viola Metallic. Revozport Aerokit Gives Porsche Taycan Bold RS Styling
UK tuner RevoZport has revealed two very intriguing bodykits for the all-electric Porsche Taycan and as you can see it makes the car look a lot more furious.
The kits are dubbed Revoluzione and GTZ of which the latter is the more drastic.
The GTZ kit or the “GT3 RS Version of the Taycan” as they call it starts up front with a prominent carbon fibre splitter with pronounced side blades as well as canards. At the back, there is a carbon diffuser taking inspiration from the 918 Spyder as well as a swan-neck carbon rear wing inspired by the new 911 GT3. If you wish you can also add the bold turbine-style wheels but for us, this ruins the menacing styling.
