It’s a car of many talents, but now the Taycan Cross Turismo can add a Guinness World Record to its CV
Regular readers of TopGear.com will know just how capable the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is, but now its abilities have been verified with (yet another) bona fide world record.
Yup, a team led by TV producer JF Musial has logged the greatest altitude change by an electric car, driving all the way from the depths of a mine to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado, covering almost five kilometres… upwards.
Of course, back in 2020 TG’s own Chris Harris entered the record books in a Taycan with the longest ever drift in an electric car, until it was, er, immediately beaten a Dutch racing driver.
The altitude team started out in Death Valley’s Badwater Basin (the lowest point in America, 86m below sea level) before heading even lower: 540.8 metres down a ramp normally only tackled by specialist vehicles at Eagle Mine, Michigan.
From there they crossed six states and covered 2,250km (horizontally), amassing 4,842.967 metres of altitude gain by the time they reached the top of Pikes Peak some 33 hours and 48 minutes later.
Apparently oxygen levels fell 40 per cent between the start and finish lines. Yikes.
Three groups of drivers worked in tandem to complete the journey as quickly as possible, with Dai Yoshiahara - a class winner at the 2020 Pikes Peak hill climb - behind the wheel for the final leg.

Porsche sales hit record levels in 2021 as Taycan sales double
Stuttgart reports best sales on record last year, driven chiefly by SUVs and Taycan EV
Porsche is the latest car manufacturer to report record sales in 2021, delivering more than 300,000 vehicles in the face of drastic supply chain shortages.
In the wake of similar announcements from Rolls-Royce, Lotus and sibling brand Bentley, Porsche has confirmed the highest delivery volumes in its 91-year history, driven largely by unprecedented demand for SUVs and its Taycan EV family.
In total, the brand sold 301,915 cars worldwide last year, an 11% increase year-on-year. Its most popular model, the Macan SUV, accounted for more than a third of this figure, with 88,362 units sold.
The larger Cayenne was close behind, selling 83,071 units, while demand for the two-year-old Taycan EV more than doubled to put it in third place with 41,296 units sold.

Taycan outsells 911! Best selling Porsche models of 2021 revealed
Porsche set an all-time global sales record in 2021, with the German premium carmaker delivering 301 915 vehicles, which is an 11% increase over 2020.
The rise of the electric car was also very much apparent in the results, with sales of the Porsche Taycan electric saloon more than doubling to 41 296 units. This places it ahead of the iconic 911 sports car, which managed 38 464 sales last year.
Although the Taycan is gaining in popularity it’s still not the most popular vehicle in the Porsche stable. That honour belongs to the brand’s two SUVs, with the Macan finding 88 362 homes around the globe in 2021, and the larger Cayenne following closely with 83 017 sales.
Interestingly, Porsche is currently working on an all-electric Macan model, which is set to debut in 2023 riding on a distinct platform. Could this be Porsche’s next big sales hit? It certainly seems plausible.
Back to the conventional Porsches, the Panamera attracted 30 220 sales in 2021, while the 718 Boxster and Cayman models accounted for 20 502 deliveries in total.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo S will take on safety car duties for the 2022 Formula E championship, replacing the Mini Pacesetter and BMW i8 Roadster.
The safety car will make its debut at the opening round of the championship on 28-29 January in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia.
Porsche’s electric saloon will take to the track in a multicoloured livery representing the colours of every team on the grid, as well as the colours of the championship and the FIA. It will wear the number 22 as a nod to the number of series entrants this year.
The Taycan Turbo S is Porsche’s flagship EV, with its 751bhp twin-motor, four-wheel-drive powertrain propelling it from 0-62mph in just 2.6sec - 0.2sec quicker than the Formula E racers themselves.
Several modifications have been made to the Taycan Turbo S to make it suitable for use as a safety car. The front and rear bumpers feature integrated flashing lights, for example, which work together with the prominent lightbar on the roof.
Inside, the rear seats have been replaced with a roll-cage, while racing bucket seats with six-point harnesses are used in the front. A ‘high-tech’ communication system, a Marelli data logger system and a fire extinguisher bring it into line with FIA circuit safety requirements.

This isn’t just a Porsche Taycan wearing a fancy frock. This is your new Formula E safety car.
We’ll start with the, ahem, obvious. See that multicoloured livery? Course you do, can’t miss it. Well, it represents the colours of all 11 teams competing in the championship, as well as the colours of the FIA and Formula E. Oh, and it’ll also wear the number 22, to represent – yep, you guessed it – the 22 drivers on the grid.
Naturally, there have been other modifications to ensure the Taycan is up to safety car standards, including a high-vis lightbar positioned on the roof and flashing lights integrated into both front and rear bumpers. It’ll shine brighter than a full moon, this thing.
The interior hasn’t escaped either, as the car comes complete with a new roll cage, bucket seats with six-point seatbelts, Marelli data logger, that all-important fire extinguisher and high-tech communication system.
There’s no change to the road-going Turbo S's 93kWh battery and dual-motor set-up, not that long-standing Portuguese safety driver Bruno Correia should have too much to complain about with 751bhp to play with. In layman’s terms, that translates as 0-62mph in 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 162mph. What you'd call Not Slow, then.

Porsche has expanded its Taycan line-up with the introduction of the new Sport Turismo – which combines the estate-style body of the Cross Turismo with the lower ride height of the saloon.
Now available to order, priced from £73,560 and available in the same five trims as the Taycan saloon, it is aimed at customers who want the “everyday practicality” of the Cross Turismo but don’t want to “miss out on the on-road performance” of the saloon.
The range kicks off with the rear-driven Taycan, climbing to £84,830 for the 4S, £104,990 for the GTS, £117,670 for the Turbo and topping out at £140,080 for the 751bhp Turbo S.
The dynamically focused GTS – described as the new "sporty sweet spot" of the Taycan range – will launch first, at the end of February, before the other models are added to the range in mid-March.
The Sport Turismo drops the 4x4-inspired off-road cladding of the higher-riding variant but keeps its 1200- litre boot and 45mm of extra head room over the saloon.
