Dogs are often described as man’s best friend, but they also enjoy the company of women too, and a cheeky pup will quickly become an integral part of the family. So as you make the switch to electric power it’s important to take the whole family along with you, make sure that everyone is onboard and happy.
Kids will often be supportive of the shift to zero emission family transport because the youngsters are into the environment and that sort of thing. But what about Fido? Is there a wagon out there that will meet the needs of the family pooch?
Sure, we could be all sensible and send you on in the direction of the likes of the Ford Mustang Mach-E – nice big SUV that, and we’ve established that it’s great for motorway driving – or the MG 5 estate and its 464 litres of bootspace. Both of those are available with dog guards from the official accessories catalogues, which sound like you’re provided with a German shepherd to make sure no one takes your car, but is actually a handy barrier that turns your boot into an impromptu cage and prevents your schnauzer from turning into a missile in the unfortunate event of an accident.

Why did you give the Taycan Sport Turismo an award?
Because the people have spoken... and they’ve spoken well. For the first time in the history of the Electric Awards (OK, it’s only been going three years) we threw it over to you, the good readers, to decide which car should drive away with the inaugural Readers’ Choice award. And you did us proud, voting in your thousands on TopGear.com.
The winner, by a small landslide, was the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo. Excellent choice we say, because who doesn’t like a car that looks like a Porsche, goes like a Porsche, runs on electrons and has a boot big enough for your bags and your hound? With 16 per cent of the vote, and almost double its nearest competitor (Polestar 2), frankly it walked it. Some surprises in there too, though – the wildly expensive Rimac Nevera in third, the short-on-range Honda e in fourth and the ridiculously good looking Hyundai Ioniq 5... in fifth. At the other end of the scale we find the Mokka-e, iX3 and EQA in the relegation zone. We look forward to finding out whether opinions translate into actual sales…

Another Guinness World Record goes to Porsche Taycan Cross Tourismo
Terry Grant just added another to his collection of 25 Guinness World Records. This time he managed to do 69 consecutive donuts in a Porsche Tycan Cross Tourismo. The feat was completed in Sweden, on a frozen sea during the 2022 Race Of Champions. It wasn’t easy though, the car’s safety features kept cutting the power down and the tires kept clawing the ice away.
But Terry Grant is not known for giving up and after a very long day he managed to achieve a stunning 69 consecutive donuts - that’s 69 times spinning around in a space of 2 car lengths. Just thinking about it makes us dizzy. Here’s the video of the record attempt:

What’s the best electric car for accelerating in?
The Taycan Turbo S is turbocharged by name and turbocharged by nature. It’s just not actually turbocharged
If you’re into neck-snapping everyday acceleration then this must surely be your chief reason to make the grand switch to driving an electric car. The early bird gets the worm and the early adopter gets to cruising speed quicker than anyone else. Except all the other people who have faster cars. But who wants piffling combustion engined exotica when you can get behind the wheel of the future?
Take the mouthful that is the Porsche Taycan Turbo S Sport Turismo, for instance, which gets you to 62mph from zero in a mere 2.8 seconds thanks to the wondrous magic conjured up by its launch control system. It'll cost you, though, with a price tag of £141,000 before you even consider raking through the options list for goodies. You could spend a mere £13,170 on an entry level Fiat 500 that even has mild hybrid tech under the bonnet and simply leave earlier. Time really is money in this scenario. But hitching a lift on a slow coach isn't any fun at all, is it.
We did also briefly consider the notion that the Porsche Taycan Turbo S Sport Turismo could get to 62mph faster than you can say its name, wouldn’t that have been something, but we averaged out at a heady 1.55secs. Plenty of time in hand to make a well observed comment about the weather, no doubt.

Owners of any Taycan can now have it upgraded to 2023 spec; first 'feature on demand' added
Owners of any Porsche Taycan produced since the EV was launched in 2020 can now have it upgraded to feature the latest technology and functionality.
It means that effectively, irrespective of a given car's age, it will offer the same efficiency, connectivity and driver assist functions as one rolling fresh off the production line in Zuffenhausen today.
Porsche has yet to confirm exactly when the free software update will be available in the UK, but has said it will require the car to visit a workshop - with the duration of the upgrade depending on how old the car is.
Following the update, Taycan owners will also be able to active keyless opening as a 'feature on demand' as and when it's required, though Porsche has yet to give a price.
The headline software upgrades centre on improving the Taycan's efficiency and reducing charge times. Post-upgrade, the Normal and Range driving modes in four-wheel-drive versions will "almost completely" disconnect the front motor under partial load, reducing strain on the battery.
Plus, the selected level of regenerative braking will be retained even when switching driving modes, and improved thermal management of the battery – "especially at low outside temperatures" – allows the Taycan to be rapidly charged more often.

While Porsche is working hard on the all-electric Macan, the Taycan will receive its first major software upgrades. The technology progress is relentless and the manufacturers are learning that in order to keep selling they need to keep their products up to date.
Electric fleet of Porsche is going to grow over the coming years, apart from the new Macan that we now hear may be delayed to 2024, there are rumors of electric 911 being considered. Porsche has been forced to recall more than 40,000 Taycans due to an electrical issue that could disable the airbags.
The defect, which affects 40,421 Porsche Taycan EVs across the globe, is related to a major wiring harness that has been reported as getting damaged when the driver’s or passenger’s seat is moved in a “longitudinal adjustment”.
This then inadvertently disables the car’s airbags and seatbelt tensioners, reports German trade journal KFZ-Betrieb, although it hasn't been confirmed which airbags are affected.
Porsche’s recall has instructed owners to visit one of its dealerships to get the issue remedied, adding that engineers will use textile fabric tape “to further secure the harness under the seat and help prevent potential for harness damage during seat adjustment”.
The Taycans affected are those produced between 10 July 2019 and 18 May 2021.

Having driven the Porsche Taycan Turbo S ourselved, we can confirm that it is blisteringly quick and now they have taken back the EV lap record at the infamous Nürburgring Nordschleife.
This particular Taycan Turbo S was fitted with a new performance kit and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC). When attempting lap records, it is compulsory to fit racing seats and roll cage so other than this, the car was completely stock and even weighed the same as the car you’ll find in a showroom.
Lars Kern was once again the man behind the wheel and managed to lap the 20.8-kilometre (12.9-mile) configuration of the Green Hell in 7 minutes and 33 seconds. This is a two-second improvement over the Tesla Model S Plaid.

A time of 7m 33s from ‘entirely standard production car’ beats the Model S Plaid’s 7m 35s
There’s nothing “entirely standard” about an electric car that can hustle its bulk through one of the world’s scariest racetracks in record time, but here we are. It’s 2022, and Porsche has just claimed a new Nürburgring lap record.
Because its “entirely standard” Taycan Turbo S – admittedly fitted with the new performance kit and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control – romped its way home to a time of 7m 33s – two seconds faster than that pesky Tesla Model S Plaid.
Porsche also fitted “the required roll cage and racing seats”, but aside from that – and the aforementioned kit, and PDCC – standard. Lars Kern, a man familiar with scary fast hot laps, oversaw the Not-A-Real-Turbo S Taycan’s progress through the Green Hell. It was the full 20.8km circuit.
Remember, Porsche actually held the electric car lap record when a Really Standard Taycan did a 7m 42 back in 2019. Last September, Tesla hit back with the Model S Plaid.

Porsche’s all-electric saloon rounded the 12.9-mile circuit in 7min 33sec, beating the Tesla Model S Plaid, which achieved a time of 7min 35sec in September 2021.
The Taycan Turbo S, which produces 616bhp compared with the Model S Plaid’s 1000bhp, was fitted with a new performance pack.
Available through Porsche Tequipment (but only for customers in Germany for the time being), the performance pack includes a set of 21in, RS Spyder-design wheels with Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres, which are specially designed for tracking driving.
