Porsche's new retrofittable AC on-board charger halves charging times for all Taycan models

If you own a Porsche Taycan and like using AC charging, the company has some great news for you. It's making available a new 19.2 kW AC on-board charger (OBC), which can be retrofitted to all Taycan models.

In the US, the only market it was announced for thus far, it costs $1,850.15 plus labor costs associated with the estimated 12 hours of work it will take to replace the older charger with it. It's located behind the front trunk area, and it looks like it might not be very easy to get to - not to mention that there's also associated wiring that needs to be replaced.

If you're wondering why you'd bother, the answer is the new part basically halves charging times. For Taycans equipped with the Performance Battery, using the new OBC means you'll get from 0 to 100% in 4.8 hours, versus 9.5 hours for the previous charger.

Taycans which have the Performance Battery Plus will fully charge in 5.3 hours, compared to 10.5 hours before. Naturally, if you want to take full advantage of these speeds, you need a 19.2 kW Wall Charger Connect - which, as luck would have it, is also launching alongside the new OBC.

Porsche's $7,000 Roof Tent Makes Camping Not Suck

There's camping, there's glamping, and there's sleeping in a Porsche tent on top of your Taycan Cross Turismo.

The campground at Leo Carrillo State Park in Malibu, California is lovely, but you’re not exactly roughing it. There are park restrooms with indoor plumbing and a Starbucks 10 minutes down the road. Each campsite has a fire pit with a built-in cooking grate and there’s a cute little store where a disaffected local teenager will sell you firewood, medicine, snacks and booze. Every night, you can catch a postcard-worthy sunset on the beach of the Pacific Ocean. It’s camping for people who don’t totally love camping. It’s camping for people like me.

That’s why I totally dig Porsche’s new rooftop tent. It’s hella easy to set up and pretty comfy inside, and it makes a weekend in the great outdoors a lot easier if, like me, you don’t live your life like it’s an REI catalog. Yes, the tent is ridiculously expensive, at just over $7,000. But if you’ve already spent the money on a brand-new Porsche — in this case, a $170,000 Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo — an extra 7 grand is probably just a drop in the bucket. I assume, anyway.

Available through Porsche’s Techquipment accessories catalog, this $7,028 tent can be fitted to any of the company’s cars – ones that can support roof rails and crossbars, at least. A butch wagon like the Taycan Cross Turismo is perfect for this setup, but note that Techquipment has lots of pictures of this tent on top of various 911s, so please, future 911 Dakar buyers, go wild. All packaged up, the tent weighs 123 pounds, so getting it on and off the car is not a one-person job. But setting it up at the campsite is totally something you can do on your own while your friends are yelling at each other trying to set up their rickety Target tent — and it only takes, like, 10 minutes, tops.

Updated Porsche Taycan and Taycan Sport Turismo spied without camouflage

Porsche Taycan and Taycan Sport Turismo are about to debut their first facelift. Although it may feel that both EVs are new, Taycan was unveiled nearly 4 years ago and its Sport Turismo version will be two years old this year.

While it may feel it is too early for mid-life facelift, the world of electric cars is moving on fast. The technology has changed a lot in the last couple of years and Porsche is updating both Taycan versions and decided that small cosmetic changes are in order.

Thanks to the YouTube channel CarSpyMedia we have the best and clearest look yet at both vehicles. According to the channel, Taycan and Taycan Sport Turismo were spotted during winter testing in Sweden. As you’ll see in the video, both cars are wearing a minimal camouflage and are seen for the first time in plenty of detail:

Next up for a grudge match with the M3 wagon is Porsche's silent Taycan GTS Sport Turismo

But the M3 Touring wins here. Maybe this is all rose-tinted specs, because we’ve wanted this car to happen for so long, but I reckon BMW’s engineers felt the same, and went the extra mile. Maybe you agree, maybe you don’t and I doubt anything I’ve written here would persuade a Taycan Sport Turismo buyer to switch to an M3 Touring instead. Just as well, apparently the waiting list is now a year long.

Is This A 1,000 HP Porsche Taycan Turbo GT Prototype?

Spy photographers in Europe have recently captured a very interesting Porsche Taycan prototype because this could be our first decent sighting of what could be an ultra-high-performance version of the electric vehicle.

Tentatively known as the Taycan Turbo GT, the prototype stands out as it wears a massive rear wing and a pronounced spoiler. The model also appears to sport the same front fascia as the facelifted variant and the blocky camouflage at the outside corners could be hiding canards.

As we write this, the most potent Taycan is the Turbo S which pushes out 750 hp and can hit 100 km/h in a face-warping 2.8 seconds. Sure this is plenty fast for a sedan but the title of fastest four-door EV sits with Elon Musk and his Tesla Model S Plaid and Porsche may want to grab this title.

Porsche has not mentioned too much about this prototype but we are expecting it to slot above the Turbo S with a rumoured output of around 1,000 hp (746 kW).

Porsche Taycan gains Apple Maps EV routing in CarPlay

Porsche Taycan users in the US can now access Apple Maps' EV routing feature via CarPlay instead of having to exit CarPlay altogether and use Apple Maps on their phones. Of course, Porsche's infotainment system also offers that, but a lot of users are already using CarPlay, so it makes sense to offer both EV routing features simultaneously.

The EV routing functionality does more than just plan your route and navigate you to the appropriate charging stations. Apple Maps will also give you charging time estimations, energy usage details, taking into account elevation, real-time traffic information and other variables that may impact your driving range and charging station planning.

Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo review

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“In terms of its breadth of ability, the Taycan Cross Turismo is brilliant. We’d have it over an Audi RS6 or any Panamera”

The Cross Turismo is arguably the most complete fast estate available today. Not the biggest or most practical by a long chalk, maybe not the most engaging alongside a petrol M3 Touring, but in terms of its breadth of ability and fulfilling the role it sets out for itself, it is brilliant. We’d have it over an Audi RS6 or any Panamera. Only the rowdier M3 and E63 could possibly tempt us to the petrol side.

More than that, it’s a better car than a regular Taycan – marginally blunter to drive, but moving away from a purer sporting focus serves the Cross Turismo well. Similar underneath they may be, but this is a different car in terms of outlook, ability and ethos and further distanced from the four-door than we expected. Its comfort and dynamic range is dazzling, it comes across as even more thoroughly developed and capable. Porsche has moved the game on. Not cheap, but quite possibly the best sporting electric car on sale today.
