Porting away from MTN

Sick of Autopage and expensive MTN:
1. What is the best method to port:
1.1 With one month's notice i cancel/stop the contract and tell them i want to go onto prepaid using the same MTN sim card. (then i can port anywhere).
1.2 With one month's notice i cancel and port to Cell C prepraid (i go and buy a cheap sim).

* A few months ago i cancelled a 2nd contract with Autopage and they told me that i will lose the number as it cannot go to prepaid, does this not sound dodgy as it means (1.1) is invalid.

2. Have dual call, i.e. a 2nd data only sim card. What can i do with this. Ideally:
2.1 I would port it to prepaid (have its own number - its a microsim, so it does have value).

Let the contract run out completely, i.e. past 24 months. Good luck in getting the exact date from Autopage...It will automatically go onto month-to-month, meaning you can cancel or port anytime.

Then just port to Cell C prepaid. You will have to really keep your hands on the port because Autopage must give permission to Cell C to "take" the number. If Autopage doesn't for whatever obscure reason, Cell C would be powerless. Once that is done, you can choose a new contract from Cell C.

You will have to check with them, but even if you do, I doubt if you will get the correct info.

I ported away from MTN recently. The conversion to prepaid was done the same day (actually hour) I called them and the next day I ported to Cell C. But since Autopage won't let you change to prepaid, it may be better just to wait until after month 24 before putting in a porting request. Just be polite but extremely persistent with Autopage. You could also go the hellopeter route as Autopage answers queries there.
