Possible FNB inContact SMS scam?

I have a business cheque account with them and didn't receive a sms. Guess only certain users were affected.

What is strange about it bud? Not only is a well known and obvious scam but, just by asking such a trivial question, we also know your IQ :D And please don't ask where is the scam in all this - (in such a case the IQ level will have to be readjusted once more) :D

Well known and obvious? Strange that I can't find anything on the internet about it... "bud"! :D

the thing is the sms is from FNB's numbers and the email I got is from their servers and not from anywhere else.

perhaps a bit of research on your side would have prevented you from announcing your debatable IQ to all. :D

seems to be an internal ERROR in fnb.

Whether you have an overdraft facility or not, you might for some reason go over your overdraft limit or overdraw your account when a cheque or debit order goes of your account without there being sufficient funds. The bank may tolerate the excess up to a certain amount or unpay the cheque or debit order. Depends on your credit rating.

edit: Maybe RBJacobs can explain it better. a PM has been sent.

"Paid to" not "Paid From"

I think you just highlighted your own lack of an IQ with this assumption of yours ;)

The Call Centre number states that it's an error that they are aware of (a pre-recorded message plays)

So no secret santa :(

My one buddy works with Naedo, will ask him what's up...

It is a "Tolerance Limit". I think they will let your account overdraw by that amount before returning debits.

Since this would count as a credit limit extension, it would be in contravention of the national credit act - extensions on credit limits must be agreed to by both parties.

thank goodness for mybroadband forums :)
I'm outta the country and just woke up to see the email and incontact sms, the money doesn't show in my account (R2000) and google only pops up two relevant links (mybroadband :D and pcformat forums)...

Anyway, reading this thread put my mind at ease

I just received this SMS
"FNB :) Please ignore the message alert for R1000.00 CR which was sent to you in error on 12 December. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused."

I got SMS too, but just got another apologising for the error ;)

FNB will be sending out a SMS apology to the affected accounts receiving the incontact message alert. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.

And you bothered to quote me after 4 (four) pages full of postings :D you really fancy me don't you :D I guess the truth will come out eventually . . . You see I am not from that country, however not long ago, South Africa had some issues with internet banking. Some officialls of African origin working for a cell phone company, even got arrested (if my memory serves me right) You see - mistakes do not just happened. Somewhere somehow must have done something. The best thing for your bank is to write down the mistake to 'incompetency'. Obviously 'they' need some more practice :D Eventually they will succeed. I agree with you in one thing - Assumption is the mother of all fups :D the question is - who is assuming the right things and who not. You trust them - I don't :D better safe then sorry.

the cellular companies must be loving this one :) at least a couple hundred thousand sms's extra in what is already the busiest month sms wise... even at the low prices that the banks must get for each one, will still be a bit of extra cash on the side...

In my email inbox on my private email account. I get about 12 emails a day telling me that my online banking accounts have some problem or other and needs to be verified from ABSA, FNB, Standard and Nedbank, all scams though as I don't even have internet banking. Additionally I get SARS email each day telling me that I am owed a refund.
