Hey there guys, I have been using iBurst for a couple years now... No real issue, but then again I wouldn't know since I've never compare to anyone else.

Here is results to the test thing stated here then I shall explain my problem:

Ok, so my problem is this... I am a gamer and enjoy my online gaming and I have heard that iBurst isn't the best to play online games because it's wireless or something. But besides that I haven't really had an issue and usually get a latency of around 60 or so...

Now all of a sudden I'm averaging between 150 - 200 (Will jump to 600 and then I would time out), which I cannot do anything with! So I decided to look into it, I downloaded a program called Net Limiter 3 as recommended by a friend to see what programs are taking up what bandwidth. And the only program is Steam. So I further looked into it and the program tells me that steam is downloading at about 6kb/s on steam, while I am on a server in game. Wouldn't know how much it was doing when I was fine?

But anyhoo... I went to the site Pingtest.net and Speedtest.net to check speeds and what not... As you can tell from the above, I am getting a latency of 820 ms :O :O And compared to the New York server, they basically the same thing!! Comparing to other iBurst users that are getting 120 ms... BTW, my signal is at 100% and always has been.

Oh and forgot to mention, this is still a good connection that takes place at night.. During the day it's even worst! And noticed my speeds dropped too... I usually use to get 128 kb/s from flashget both day and night (Btw, how much is it suppose to be considering it's a 1Mb connection? [And I know it's wireless, but just general question])

If there is any other information you need, please let me know! And I have a 5GB uncapped package and currently have about 1GB left (When capped, I can't even get into steam.)

I really hope you can help, and I aint flaming iBurst.. I am dedicated to them, just this has been going on for awhile now and I really want to get it sorted out.

Before I forget, when I goto the iBurst site and do a speed test there it shows me I am getting:

Upload Speed: 382 kbps (I wish!)
Download Speed: 198 kbps

Since I have had iBurst (Which has been something like 5 years) I have never got speed faster than 128 kbps in flashget.

Peace Out :p

I have a feeling that iBurst has put something in place to shape traffic again, and it's not working so well.

Steam wont connect, but browsing is fine.
Wow connects, battle.net chat works fine, but doesn't load the world fine.

A FW blocks all ICMP to and from www.iburst.co.za

I suggest you optimize your signal using these recommendations http://www.iburst.co.za/documents/support/Antenna_installation.pdf

The latency issues are typically related to not using the optimal MTU setting of 1392.

Finally, Steam does trigger the P2P services control so the suggestion is not to game while updates are in progress.

Thanks for the replies guys,

I have a feeling that iBurst has put something in place to shape traffic again, and it's not working so well.

Steam wont connect, but browsing is fine.
Wow connects, battle.net chat works fine, but doesn't load the world fine.
So how can we confirm weather they shaping it or not? We paying over R800 p/m for a shaped connection? :( That cannot be?

And I am not just talking about during the night, it is even giving me trouble during the day when I still have plenty cap! Even when it's a new month and I still have my full 5GB.

I have disabled both windows and personal firewall and still get the same results...

My modem is basically right by there window and like I said it shows me 100% signal.

Well I have tried both MTU settings that iBurst has recommended and 1392 is the MTU setting I've been using since! So I don't think the latency can be related to the MTU setting.

And in terms of the updates things.... I make sure to disable every single internet related thing when playing in order to get max ping (I even disable my steam chat)... But it doesn't help at all... It's so confusing and aggravating! I know for a fact there are no updates when playing...

And please just recheck my stats results that I posted above to confirm weather those are normal or not? I had nothing running except for my browser when I done those tests...

Peace Out

My problems came in on Wednesday, the Fourways hospital tower signal dropped. It might be that, or hectic shaping. But they seem to be avoiding the issue so far.

Since whatever changes was made over the past few weeks, nothing has been the same...

P2P has always been shaped and there has been no changes in any service control settings for yonks.

The FW is inline with the website and not your PC.

I don't use WOW but there are others who do and confirm whether it is working or not. Please PM me your UTID and I'll investigate.

The tower has moved a few hundreds of metres. Do you have an omni? Can't move it back till it looks like a palm tree!

Can't move it back till it looks like a palm tree? WTF? IS this a silly community complaint thing again?

If my signal strength is at 70% and error rate is about 2-5%, how much better would an omni make it?

EDIT: FYI, I'm not allowed to mount stuff OUTSIDE of my building as per estate rules.

In My experience the external omni makes a massive difference and mine is next to the modem hanging on the window...

What do you mean by massive difference - does it lower error rates - improve signal - lower latency - increase throughput?

Signal jumps from 20-40% to 80-90% and frame errors drop significantly as a result I get much better speeds...

Correct, you can mount it inside the window and it will make a difference.
