Post Office close to collapse

I'm assisting a family member in renewing their SASSA card. I first was trying to find out which post office does it. When I phoned the Northlands Post Office the lady that answered the phone informed me that they have run out of the cards and won't be getting any new ones until December. That the family member can carry on using their SASSA card to withdrawal their cash at a till but not at an ATM. Has anybody heard of this and is it true?

@KatieKim

By the way, if you help your family member to obtain and set up a Tymebank account, the SASSA grant money can be received a few days earlier than usual, upon request.

And they will have no monthly admin fees.

And many free transactions.

And very low cash withdrawal fees.

Thanks for the replies. I'll ask her if she is interested in setting up any mentioned accounts.

I do wonder about the card situation though. There is no mention of any card shortages but at least they have given more time to get a new one.

My ward councilor has just whatsapped that the SASSA gold card is now expiring on the 28th February 2025 and it must be changed by then. There are very few places one can go to actually do this. I'm going to have another go at my relative to change to a bank account. I believe that you can now do this online. Has anyone got any experience with this?

Post Office close to collapse

Millions of gold SASSA cards are expiring over the next few months and post offices are overflowing with people needing to renew their cards.
  • Human rights organisation the Black Sash has raised concern about the limited staff to help beneficiaries as well as the way long queues are managed.
  • However, the Post Office says that queues outside its offices are not unusual during peak times, especially on grant payment dates.
Chaos ensued outside the South African Post Office branch in Athlone, Cape Town this week.

Will another valueless article like this one help, the Post Office close sooner?

If so, the publish 10 a day - if not then cease and desist.

Firstly, best not to "necro" (bring up threads that are years old) - the Mods don't like that much.

The SASSA issue - just go to their website and see what they now offer. Last we knew you had to always go into a branch to make any changes. https://www.sassa.gov.za/
If you're in Jo'burg then the Alexandra branch is surprisingly nice and helpful, not dangerous but careful where you park your car if going in that way.
