Remember: Even if you update your firmware, regardless if it failed or succeeded your warranty still applies.
The option is open to anyone to not update and wait for the drive to fail, when that happens you can swap out but you might just get another affected drive.
I think you are confused, the method for determining a affected drive is as follows: Check drive model number, then look at the corresponding list of affected firmwares. If your firmware is listed, the drive is affected.
They put the serial number check as a convenience for people who can't cross reference drive model numbers and firmwares, in which case a serial number is a simple alternative.
The problem is the firmware (software), which is why updating it could fix it, therefore, a ST31000340AS with firmware SD15 is affected simply because there is a bug in the software controlling the hardware. They wouldn't use the same code for multiple version of the software, it doesn't make sense. But I guess ignorance is bliss.

Did you type in your S/N and it said your drive is affected? (see http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=2467483&postcount=35) My SD15 drive isn't affected. I think it has to do with where it was manufactured, when it was manufactured and which firmware.
