He is claiming cause 1 week in July the EAF was higher, 1 week. That means it's improving.
I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect an improvement to be consistent for months.

If that were happening... if I could see the situation improving relative to last year, I'd be a happy man.

That a few days in July saw a slight improvement, in contrast to the consistent trend of reducing EAF, is very very very irrelevant. @Pak Fa Fui this should not need to be explained to you.

Back to the current confusion?

Winter turns into summer, stages go up, and up some more, and more. Not 'cos of sudden new sabotage with perfectly timed planning, not 'cos of breakdowns 'cos that was all but later denied, so 'cos of.... maintenance??

EAF presumed now mostly aside, do you have a theory @Pak Fa Fui ?

BTW, as I think I understand it, summer maintenance is still quite a few weeks away based on the past.

I don't get the "but... but .... but ... under ADR!!!!" nonsense.

EAF is not improving. Why not? ADR isn't there any longer. What's the problem NOW @Pak Fa Fui ?

Hovering around 50% is pathetic. Even 80%, given the age of the fleet, is pathetic. 50% is just beyond pathetic. It's incompetence on an incredible scale. Trying to defend it, is atrocious.

It's currently sitting at over 6000MW.

Maintenance has already increased dramatically.

Current excuse was "preparation for next week", but yeah, looks like it's been moved forward.

The jump from stages 1/3 to 2/4 to 4/4 to 4/5 would still be unexplained though

Indeed it is as you say, unexplained, (or at least the cause is "unexpected breakdowns" or whatever Eskom calls it).

My understanding is that the increased maintenance correlates with a decreased demand over warmer months because we're not heating buildings.

So that extra 4000MW -odd now off o maintenance isn't enough to explain the stage 5 as most of that is mitigated with lower demand.

Except I've now heard an additional possible excuse: summer time tariffs are lower for the big industrial users now so they will use more.
 
I can't imagine a world where industry makes a choice to slow down because electricity is slightly pricier.
Yeah neither can I, especially since they already getting massive discounts compared to the everyday pleb

In the last week, however, Eskom has upped load shedding to stage 4 following a regular daily rotation of stage 1 and 3 load shedding.

Ramokopga said that this was due to planned maintenance increasing from roughly 2,500 MW in May to about 6,500 MW in the last week.

Although the Minister acknowledged that the increase in maintenance will intensify load shedding, he said that it is paramount that generation units that need maintenance be taken offline.

“We don’t foresee these being long outages, and that’s why we choose to take them out,” the minister added.

“And we’ll continue to ramp up at this scale or even a bit higher in relation to planned outages.”

“This is, if you like, a controlled intensity of load shedding to allow us the opportunity to get these machines fixed.”

^^ Sounds to me like an effort to fix urgent stuff that's been piling up throughout winter, let's hope just that...
