It is a year old, but here are some of the numbers on why the lie that renewables is cheaper falls apart.

"In 2022, independent power producers, 77% of which produce wind or solar power, accounted for 27% of Eskom’s expenditure on generation, but contributed only 7% of its electricity.

By contrast, coal accounted for 56% of expenditure, but 83% of electricity. Nuclear is small, but with 1% of expenditure to produce 5% of Eskom’s electricity, it is also very cost-effective.
Put another way, nuclear energy costs Eskom about R99 per MWh. Coal comes in at R440 per MWh. Renewable independent power producers cost Eskom a staggering R2, 027 per MWh. That is not as much as the more than R4,500 it spends per MWh burning diesel in open-cycle gas turbines, but it is way more than coal or nuclear energy cost."

Renewables are fine for homes, small businesses and getting you off the grid, but they are not fine at this point for a country to rely on.
 
For load shedding predictions yes, for keeping demand lower not so much, demand in a year has dropped 2 to 4GW in some circumstances.
It is very strange that I have a constant free electricity supply from the time I got my solar. What sorcery is this? Solar is useless because it is unpredictable! :ROFL:

You obviously have difficulty in reading and understanding things... There is a big difference from IPP solar to your household system. But apparently you don't actually read for meaning you only read for what your ant-like brain can process.

Read things, slowly and carefully, let them soak into your brain, don't reply until you've understood things. I've on numerous times said solar for homes and business are great and help bring down demand, which is occuring now, but your little solar system isn't doing squat for baseload and neither are the bigger farms.
But I do understand you have difficulty in big concepts and ideas.
 
On the subject of demand, I saw this comment on Engineering News - we all know people are increasing self generation and reducing their reliance on Eskom but I found the numbers interesting. Dramatically reducing both peak and average demand on the grid, and as Eskom keeps putting through their big increases in coming years the savings will grow substantially.

Yup and the biggest drop in demand was over 2023.

Both Mondays, but the differences are astounding. Demand has dropped due to Eskom basically driving us away,

So indirectly it is affecting LS stages through lower demand, correct? As LS is about balancing both demand and supply.

Rooftop and business solar would effect demand yes, the large solar farms wouldn't effect demand, it would offset generation

Its largely a case of where the power is generated.

If its generated to go into the grid to be sold as the IPPs do, it doesn't impact demand.
If its generated by the end user (be it home, small or medium business) then it impacts demand and can be a more stable drop as the end user will size it in a way that benefits them the most.

**EDIT** I used to fall for this trap myself, but I think many people don't understand the difference between end user solar and gridscale utility solar.
End user solar is spec'd for a very specific power profile and use case
Grid scale solar has to cater for ALL the profiles and use cases and well it just can't.

Doesn't seem they do :-). But yes your breakdown is easier to understand, unless you're Benedict.
 
Benny has problems with reality in general, so technical stuff like this would be way beyond him.
Yup like a simple, your home solar doesn't effect the total generation of Eskom... It will bring down demand which does help Eskom, so in a roundabout way it will lead to lower LS.
