need to hook up a PC on the complete other side of the house to my network, wireless really isn't an option because lots of walls and it's quite a distance away. so powerline?

is it as easy as buying this plugging the ethernet cable into the first adapter and plugging the PC to the powerline adapter on the other side? is this magic real?

Wait till early morning then. ;)

Seriously you will have a lot more reliable network with a cable run, beside it's a lot cheaper and hassle free once you have the cable pulled through. Just my R 0.02.

I am sure someone else will beg to differ, however.

buying it from takealot, if it gives me trouble its going straight back. if the roof issue wasnt big, i would of ran cabling a while ago

It should work just fine as long as your electrician did not cut corners and/or bought his certificate on the black market.

I also don't understand why they say it delivers speeds 'up to 500Mb/s' when it only comes with a standard 10/100 Mb/s Ethernet port. Surely that should have been a Gigabit Ethernet port?

I am waiting for this kit to make it to our shores before also going that route.

this PC will be for email and browsing, nothing too demanding
Should be OK then if the wall plugs are on a single distribution board. One hassle I found is that the adapters should be plugged directly into the AC wall outlet and not a extension multiplug adapter (hope that makes sense).

Run a cable. You will be glad you did.
Where are you?
Maybe one of us can do it for you?
Or hire someone to do it.

i have most of the rooms in my house connected via CAT5e but this area of the house is particularly difficult to access via the ceiling. tried it and it will require more work than im willing to put in. giving this powerline kit a go; if it fails ill consider other options. thanks!

Personally despite having set up dozens upon dozens of professional wireless or wired networks I find Powerline to be extremely unreliable, though that may be the fault of the power circuitry where I've tried it.

Essentially: Couldn't get internet access unless ethernet on main plugged into router directly, minor issue but acceptable. Could only pair with the pair unit when in some plugs, would then randomly lose pairing and be unable to re-pair on the exact same plugs. Reset to factor default, exact same loop.

You're better off getting something reliable and truly wireless like a Netgear Extender TBH, or a neat cabling job. Cat5e speeds are still great.

... in a difficult to cable scenario they're OK if they work (mine do), not sure how well they would handle HD streaming though.
I stream 20gb+ MKVs from the Plex server in a different room over my 500mb Tp link adapters without any issues.

Also, I haven't had any issue with it and I've had it for more than 6 months. I've recently purchased the wifi extender too.

a wireless ap connected via a wireless ap is reliable? since when

I've also only had nothing but troubles with the powerline network technology. It's difficult to configure. It falls over all the time. I won't use it again.

Mine works perfectly through a muliplug,

Seriously amazing stuff, using it for long and quite reliable, as long as the power lines built properly

Doesn't work if you have more than 1db board,

Mine took less than a minute to configure (literally just a button press on each device) and has never stopped working. Maybe it has matured since you've used it.

will be here tomorrow, so get to test everything this weekend. Thanks all.
