Sure ... I will clarify.

The MTN rate on prepaid is R1 per 1MB downloaded ... versus R2 per MB on Vodacom. Hence, is it half the price using MTN. Regarding the line speeds, I achieve 50kbps on MTN compared to roughly 45kbps on Vodacom.

For me, being very price sensitive, I prefer using my MTN prepaid SIM for internet
 
Dolby, my understanding of MTN's rates is that it is R2/Mb for prepaid - where do you get your info?

You will only get R1 p/MB rates if you buy the R100 or R10 bundles. You can only buy those with a contract..
http://www.mtn.co.za/?pid=11468 also shows that on prepaid/pay-as-you-go you will pay R2 p/mb.
 
I came on, read my replies, and decided once and for all to show you that MTN is only R1 per MB on prepaid versus Vodacoms R2 per MB.

I put my MTN SIM in the phone, carefully recorded my prepaid balance prior to browsing (which was at R15,04) and browsed a few web pages - while keeping a firm on eye on data sent/recieved data. I disconnected GPRS at a data transfer of 996,500 bytes (pretty much a MB), and dialed to see my what my balance was now ....

"Your balance is R13,13" ... a drop of R1,91. Hmmm .... All I can say is you were right *blush* and I admit my fault ;) The MTN data rate is R2 per MB as stated ;)
 
Expensive way to prove a point. I will admit however I understand part of the post. I use prepaid when I can't access my 3G account due to other issues and somehow seem to save money as I only stick to low bandwith requirement, ie. IRC or MSN if needed and my e-mail. A R 29.00 Vodacom voucher ends up lasting me around a week if auto updates don't kick in *G*

I have disabled my Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). This effectively stops WinXP from being able to do auto updates. You can do this through Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Services, finding the BITS service in the list and stopping and disabling it. Just don't forget to enable it when you want to download the latest updates for your PC (and certain software packages).

This is my first post, so firstly, "hello" to everyone :)

I was just wondering whether anyone has considered getting a vodacom 4u "contract", for data purposes? I might be mistaken, but AFAIK it's exactly the same as 4u prepaid, except that it's, well, postpaid.

So, if I'm right, you'd have no monthly subscription, a 24 month time window, but because it's a "contract", also the ability to add data bundles to your heart's content.

Personally, I don't want any form of contract and am REALLY looking forward to prepaid bundles, but maybe this option could work for someone else...
 
Jarr......the reason we all want pre paid data is so we can get cheaper data rates with out a stuffing 24 month contract. The broadband revolution is upon us, who the hell wants to be bound by a 2 yr contract.......not me

I agree. I'm on prepaid for that exact reason. I only mentioned this because it is not like a normal contract, as one is not truly bound. It's a once-off fee for the starter pack, and that's it. No monthly payments. You pay only for what you spend, be it voice, data, sms, etc.

It was just a (seemingly bad) thought... :)

A little birdie at Siemens told me earlier today that they (Siemens) have now finished with the new programs for GPRS tracking and billing, and that the software is getting ready to RTM. Apparently some nice new ways to buy data bundles prepaid in the mix as well... As well as much more accurate "Almost Real Time" data usage stats. So, standby :D

PS -> and yes, I am back safely from my trip :D

actually, I was referring to the JAVA programs from Siemens that run at the device management stack level, and feed the data along to the software you are referring to...

I think the official price is the same as the (outrageously overpriced) "recommended" 4u pre-paid starter packs: R199-00. You can check it out here .

I hope June will see Vodacom announcing the pre-paid bundles, though. I'm not really interested in any kind of contract, even if it is "free"...
