I just bought a stack of Imation DVDs...which reminded me that I don't really know which brands are good and which should be avoided.

Pls post your experiences of the different brands...ideally with a price.

I also know there is some kind of a media number system with DVDs and CDs, but I never understood how that works. Anybody know?

I've never had a problem with Verbatim. Not that it implies I've had problems with other brands, just that I've never used them. :D

Used Verbatim (excellent, never a problem), BenQ (excellent, never a problem), 4Cos (dodgy), Samsung Plexor (less dodgy), Princo (even less dodgy).

At the end of the day, some brands of disc are better on certain brands of burner. I know that certain batches of 4Cos discs rated at 8x used to burn perfectly at 16x on BenQ writers. You should check with the manufacturer of you burner: they'll have a list of "approved" discs.

...
but every now and then you'll get a lemon :(

The king of DVD-Rs is Taiyo-Yuden. They sometimes OEM for Verbatim too.

Other than that Verbatim, TDK, Imation, Sony, etc are good, I'd go with Verbatim
as its easiest to get. DigitalPlanet used to sell TY's too.

DigitalPlanet still sell TY's:

R629 for 100 4.7GB DVD-Rs. They're not cheap but these are the best (if they are genuine of course, there
are TY rip offs on the market too).

Of course try to use DVD+R over DVD-R, there is redundant error recovery data
written in +R form and that can be helpful if a disk gets scratched.

Verbatim - tried and tested.

TDK also seems to be popular but it's not something that I would recommend based on experience.

Sound like the consensus is Verbatim.:) They are more expensive than the others tough afaik.

What's expensive is buying 50 discs and only having 30 of them write. Then having another 10 die on you later. Then you have paid R30 less for 30 less discs

Yes, they're almost the best you can get so go with them. I'd avoid
non premium disks as they give too many failures later. Stick with
TY, Verbatim, TDK, Fuji, Memorex, Imation, Sony etc.

If you just want to burn a temporary boot disk though, keeping
a ten pack of the cheapest DVD-Rs around is worthwile
or use a few DVD-RWs but those degrade too and are expensive.

Verbatim

I always check the labeling that they are "Made in Taiwan"

There are "Made in India" Verbatim DVD's aswell, but ive read on the net they arnt always as good as the Taiwan factory ones

Never had 1 bad one from Taiwan

Verbatim, non other.

Taiyo Yuden where can I buy these in CT, woud like to try them?
Heard alot about them just can't seem to find them in CT.

Verbatim :)

Hate those spindle packs, you sit with DVD's and no cases, I will only use them if I am going to be giving them away

Verbatim is what I normally buy for known quality.

I've also used Memorex though the latest 50+ batch I had did have a few burn issues (maybe 5 or so discs).

Currently using a ProData batch which has not caused me any grief.
