Prepaid ADSL debate - MWEB vs Telkom

This would be nice, I have many clients that have asked me about this.

It would be nice, bit it would also also be wishful thinking that it would ever actually happen. :(

Telkom's whole pricing structure is stuck in 1999

Maybe once Rudi has left MWeb th Telkom engineers should give him a guided tour to show him why it cannot work....

I can only assume they have no provisioning system to implement a time based access for ADSL?

The solution is to implement bitstream whereby the session is terminated at the ISP and the ISP picks up all the charges.

Strange thing about all of these debates is that every one complains but no one ever does any action against Telkom. My personal opinion is that everyone who is proposing civil disobedience with tolling as in http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ng-to-start-in-February?p=7536345#post7536345 and then meekly cozys up to Telkom (and that includes 8ta) is a hypocrite.

Let's see, a feature that is in the best interest of the customer, but would loose us revenue?

Sorry sir, "our platform" cannot support that feature.

Ah, a feature that nobody wants but we can force it on all our customers, and thus make money? Sure, we can adapt "our platform" to include that feature!

No surprise here

You guys are missing the point. This article is about ADSL line rental on a prepaid VOICE line. This isn't about prepaid ADSL.

certainly can't (or shouldnt) be a costing / profitability issue.... all of us on ADSL pay for an expensive voice telephone line rental, that many of us don't even use,
put a proper pricetag on it, and surely it must become a "can be done"?

Firstly there is no technical reason you cannot have ADSL on a prepaid voice line - ADSL in only on the portion from your house to the exchange where the ADSL portion is taken off the line and only the voive traffic goes to the POTS exchange (data jumps on to a data network). In fact as Telkom noted they have equipment that does both.

Considering I can change my current Telkom line with ADSL to a prepaid voice line there is no issue technically like needing different equipment or such. Telkom just realise how many people will switch to prepaid voice (and the substantially lower monthly rental) if they do this, so are finding any and every excuse in the book. Telkom Waya Waya annual subscription is R152.90 and the monthly option is R72.07 p/m.

I challenge Telkom to provide any and all technical information that would not allow this service (or at least try).

On prepaid ADSL vs 3G - not the same, one is a full service the other is just part of the chain (ADSL still needs an ISP). So you would need to have credit on your account to cover the ADSL monthly rental which would allow traffic to the exchange, then an ISP account to get to the internet.

I'm sure I read previously that the prepaid phone lines were subsidised by the postpaid phone lines.

Their platform does not allow this because their platform does not allow this.

From a purely technical point of view, I doubt whether there is any difference between a pre-paid and post-paid/normal phone line. I guess the only problem might be where you run out of "airtime". Telkom have to have a mechanism in place to ensure you can't make any PPPoE connections.

Telkom will stall any initiative that promotes "internet" growth while reducing the cost thereof. The only time change will happen is when they hit rock bottom. Proper competition is the only way to drive change in Telkom... and until that happens we'll continue to get these types of bu11sh#t excuses!
