But we have had an alarming number of total ADSL network failures;
Even with redundancy your site is going to disappear.
 
Also I believe that Telkom state in the terms of usage of ADSL that you are not allowed to host servers on ADSL lines. At least not on residential ones.

I assume you are saying u will be hosting it on your machine. If that is true what download speed would I achieve if say 10 people decide to download from you, maybe a few k/s if u r lucky.
 
Thanks for the correction. I always thought Telkom did that as it's a standard clause overseas. Although I bet if you're running crap loads of gigs over your connection Telkom will make sure there's plenty of 'network maintenance' in your area.

This comes 17 days after Telkom discontinues 192 kbps ADSL. Someone has been looking at someone else's cards here...

Um ... a 512 ADSL line has a Download speed of 512KB/s and an UpLoad speed of 256KB/s.

So ... 10 peeps can download from you at 25.6KB/s, or 3.2Kb/s.
That is bad.
Now torrent it. :-)

Well it doesn't actually say that local is free. That is merely how you are interpreting it. Telkom no doubt will have a different interpretation.
 
What an opportunity-freight it in

Its easy, DHL (courier) in portable hard drives with a few terrabytes regularly, make it a local subscription service like R10 a month, then the bw usage is local and uncapped. Its obvius telkom has no intention of competing with freighting it in cause the sat3 is just not economic and cannot compete with airfreight. the bandwidth on a airplane is vastly superior to sat3 obviously
 
I wonder which part of P R I C E they didn't understand?
 
ICASA has given us all those options but they are useless when the majority of the country cannot even afford to purchase the service, so basically the regulations mean nothing to non-users.

But saying the above there is supposedly a 50 000 order backlog, so maybe the country doesn't think it is too much to pay or just desperate to get broadband.
 
New service being offered.

I'll download a DVD-r/+r's worth of Data for you and ship it to you for under R100. This works out at under R25 per gig. It gets even cheaper as I'll do 2DVDs for R150. LOL, No realy!

Great Idea, but I insist on DHL door to door priority next day delivery. Can you still offer that price?

Reason for DHL is, its nice and cheap and all, but I don't want to wait several weeks because customs are a bunch of idiots... incl SAPO
