There will be a debate and SMS poll tonight on SABC 2 at 21.00
Make your vote known what should happen to Pretoria.

Would be nice of SA was able to have a participatory democracy. Obviously it cant, but it would ensure that the people's will is law.
The high cellphone penetration in SA could hold the key here. If something is shown on SABC and sms's are charged at R0, then we might be able to do it

Probably charge for the SMSs and then sell your number to cell spammers

They will change the name no matter what, AND IF YOU DONT LIKE IT GET OUT(ala Charles Nqakula

Well to tell you the truth Tshwane does sound pretty cool. But does any one know what it means

Tha plain-nut(s) of the t-apes:rolleyes:

Who cares what it means, I suggest telling the Mayor its either the R1 million car or the name Tshwane, guess which one will go? :p

I'd grant her the R1 million car if she lets this waste of OUR money die...

As far as I know I heard they might hold off on the name change for some time due too the international rebranding etc etc.

In the end they prolly will change it as they did with all our older monuments etc.

What realy pi... get me worked up is the fact that SABC already calls it Tswane in their news sevices. Damn, the name still is Pretoria until changed.

Cheerz
Voodoo

How far will this name change trend go ? Will they change Cape Town ? Looks to me after another 10 years I'm going to get lost in the country I grew up in. The othe side of Heidelberg road in JHB off the M2 got named Joe Slovo drive overnight and Welcome to Pretoria signs are already changed to Welcome to Tswane soon no foreigner will be able to pronounce any of the places South Africa will be promoting tourism to. I understand some places and streets are named after ppl who commited terrible acts against the origional inhabitants of this country and those names changed but Pretoria come on. And the talks of re renaming of JHB Int Airport ? Get the country running properly then maybe look at those things. First get the house in order.

I agree Gunny, there are more important things to be focusing on now than changing names of places.

As for the vote: I don't see how SMS votes can be fair representation given the circumstances. Granted I don't know all the details but still.

If you go to China, how many of the names do you expect to be able to pronounce? ;)

I personally couldn't care what a place is called, but given the ccircumstances, it may not be so bad.
I see no reason why any place in Africa should not have its African name.
There's nothing african about Pretoria. Also with that I don't expect a place in Holland to be named after some african chief. :/

And who decides what is an "African" name? Afrikaaners gave Pretoria it's name - in other words, people who saw AFRICA their home, not some place in Europe. Afrikaans is an African language, it's not Dutch anymore, and it developed and changed on THIS continent.
