Pretoria or Tshwane

Tshwane it must be....mainly because it pisses off so many people who deserve to pissed off

I wouldn't mind the name change (because it really is funny how angry it makes people) if only it didn't cost a million bajillion Rand to rebrand a freakin' city. That money would be better spent on food & blankets IMO.

Ok lets try this again(first post was deleted)

Hulle kan op hulle koppe staan en hulself toe poeffies, dat mense dink hulle is miershope, maar PRETORIA VIR MY, BLY PRETORIA :D :D

Well said! I personally would like it if we could keep our name, but if they want to change it, they will, no matter what the people actually wants, so I have given up on that.

But it will still cost a s-load! They put people on a "fact-finding-mission" a few years back, to look into the name change, and then some more "studies" which already cost the city more than R10-million. Could have built a small school with that money!

Good decision, there will always be opposition to transformation but ultimately change will be implemented.

I agree Gunny, there are more important things to be focusing on now than changing names of places.
If this becomes the case then a certain period of time (say a whole year) would be dedicated to dealing with a particular challenge facing the country until all challenges have been resolved one by one. One imperative doesn't and shouldn't render other imperatives unimportant.

maybe we could get a poll going here as well....

I vote for pretoria myself...
No need for the poll, just look at the demographics of the forum and you get the results without conducting a poll.

*mother-tongue thread being a pointer*

The point is that it is NOT imperative.

If its after 7de laan maby we have a chance... not like i live there but i also think its a waste and i really wonder how many people it offends so terrible like they claim?

Transformation

But is this transformation Angelo?

Without pointing fingers at you, transformation is necessary in our Rainbow Nation as long as it undoes past wrongs, mainly in the last 50 to 100 years.
We cannot focus on changing every bit of History and anyone trying to do so is foolish and will never learn from History.

IMO the name change of Pretoria has been hyped by the media as most other things are in this country, but they have brought something to the fore that needed to be addressed and that is, where are we going in South Africa with name changes.
Andries Pretorius who died in 1853, was essentially a refugee "fleeing" from the English in the Cape Colony, hence the Great Trek and well documented history available on-line and in History Books.
Pretorius was no more a refugee than Tshwane who it seems was also fleeing another rival nation to the North?

If anything be true then it would be wrong to name the City itself, Tshwane or Pretoria, as both were individuals in their own right, devoid of all the political politics and references to the Apartheid era in South Africa.
The nickname of Jacaranda City would be more appropriate as no individual is then put on a pedestal for the choice of better words.

The only solution is the current one, which looks like it may be the answer and that is calling the Metropolitan Area Tshwane and leaving Pretoria the City, Pretoria.
At least then both people and their nations are honoured and this would be in line with our Constitution that acknowledges the rights of all of South Africa's people.
Also saving quite a bit of money in the process.

My 2c.

Are you saying it was not wrong that a Western name was enforced on Africans and their place of dwelling?

So are you saying only "imperative" issues should be addressed? and it's not imperative to who? Who defines the "imperative" issues in SA?

BTTB that is the solution the government is proposing, but the minority are turning it down, they want the WHOLE area to retain its Apartheid era name.

it's not imperative as it affects an extremely small proportion of the population, yet enjoys a massive priority and therefore by definition a large budget, whereas the budget allocated to this could much rather be spent on bigger problems affecting the large proportions of the population. Savvy?

Pretoria/Tshwane Poll Result

Quoting Beeld of this morning:

91% of 20 000 SMS's voted that Pretoria should stay Pretoria.

At the debate itself the majority of the people present were previously disadvantaged.

They overwhelming agreed that Palo Jordan should take note.

I fully agree.

The Tshwane Metro is too big anyway, I heard they might want to split it up into 4...

Centurion can be its own thing again, the freaks :p

I'd go along with Jakaranda City, but over my dead body they will change it to Tshwane, I will spraypaint those signs!

BTW, there is someone clever and they spray the boards to professionally, that the Pretoria sprayed over Tswane looks normal.

The "extremely small proportion of the population" that you refer to is a good of way of defining those who oppose ranaming. Again those "bigger problems" do have their budget and shouldn't be used as an excuse to keep relics of the past. And it's interesting to note that the people who are most affected by the "big problems" are the ones who are supporting the name change and do not view it as a stumbing block to their problems getting attention.
