Pretoria = Pretoria

Is it only me who thinks it's silly to argue over the name of a place?

SA is littered with historical sites and memorials which depict the history of South Africa. Why do we look for heritage in names of the places?

I don't really care what we call Johannesburg because at the end of the day...i call it home!

What if you have stationery etc to change and it's going to cost you a pretty penny to do it?

It's just stupid and a waste of money and resources I think.:D

It's not as though you would be fined for using stationary with the old name on it. People would still know what you were referring to. :D

So you're justifying the waste that is street renaming then?

You have to take that up with the ANC.

Mulder noted that it had been previously agreed that the names of politicians would purposefully not be used for airports.

The late Oliver Tambo is a former ANC president and led the now ruling movement in exile.

Mulder said Jan Smuts Airport - which Johannesburg International was previously named - and the DF Malan Airport at Cape Town were changed for this reason - to the Johannesburg and Cape Town International Airports respectively.

I'm arguing the perspective of people referring to the historical significance. Time wasting and tax-payers money was not an issue raised by anyone.

Maybe because it was mentioned before in one of the hundreds of renaming threads to be found on mybb.

The ANC and the SABC (or are they not actually one in the same?) have always thought they are entitled to do whatever they choose. This outcome is a victory for democracy in SA. VIVA PRETORIA!!!

Good. I never know where the SABC are referring to when they talk about Thswane. It's the same as using Ekurhuleni when talking about Benoni.

"It has fk all to do with Black vs White"

Unfortunately there are too many people in SA who think like you. Every. Single. Thing. In this country has something to do with black vs white. Name-changing much more so. Don't be so naive as to believe otherwise.

Aeron, he is actually right. It has nothing to do with black vs white. It's anc vs white.:D

It has nothing to do with race, Pretoria is part of the Afrikaans heritage, named after a famous Afrikaans fighter called Andries Pretorius. England vs South Africa (Boerwar/Boere oorlog)

It has fk all to do with Black vs White

actually Pretoruis is renounced for his efforts during "die groot trek" (great trek), bloedrivier, boomplaats and died 1 year before the first Boererepubliek of Zuid-Afrika was found. He had nothing to do with the Boerewar, he actually stayed behind during the trek, but was forced to come to the Afrikaner's aid - a few zulus is to blame and got the beating of their live and BloedRivier (lets face it, this is why they want to change the name)

My history lesson :o

The name Pretoria is a combination of Andries Pretorius, the founder: Marthinus Wessels Pretorius (Andries's son), and the Roman name Praetorian that refers to "capital or control".

LOL... while I don't appreciate the "darkies" insult, we all know exactly what is going on. There are some in the Halls of power on Pretoria who would love to take the name "Pretoria" away from those who love that name. And their first language is not English or Afrikaans. This is a VERY black/white issue.

I don't want to start a race issue or a fight, but you need to be consistent. Either whitey and darkie are out, or BOTH are in. I prefer the former.

If you really want to go the whole hog, take a safety razor to your head and shave it close. The absolute best feeling. The first time you do it though you will look like a serious whitey! (no tan).
