Pretoria WUG

To celebrate the 2 year mark we will be having a PTAWUGmeet, Saturday 15 August 2009, at 10:30 for 11:00 in Doornpoort, Pretoria North.

All current wuggers and prospective and interested persons welcome. This is a good opportunity to meet connected wuggers face to face, ask questions and gain more insight on how PTAWUG operates and what we do on the wug.
There will be braaiers and fires, so bring your dop and meat for a lekker kuier after the meeting.

Please register and add your name on the wiki and see map and more details at http://www.wug.za.net/wiki/index.php/PTAWUGmeet_2009-08-15

about a 100 people at the meeting, the 5 cases of free beer went quickly, braaid lekker on the 3 braaiers goldfish provided and charcoal sponsored by wuggers. thanks to everyone that attended, had good discussions, plans and clarifications.
Next meeting in October or November

One of my friends told me about this. I was intrigued and started to read up on it. Must say I was skeptical at first.

I registered as a prospective user on http://www.wug.za.net/ did the LOS test and saw that potentially I can see at least 5 Highsites ( Connection Points ). Then the special came up @ miro… I ordered my kit got it within a day. Was easy to setup and test it. Just a note here – attract a friend with a beer or two to help. Cause when you are looking for the best signal it is much easier when somebody else moves the pole around. We set the whole kit up ( plus testing ) within 4 hours.

Then got promt help from one of the people on the IRC that can assign an ip. And viola was connected and happy with the whole of PTAWUG to play with.

Must say R2000 aint bad for a once off payment to be part of a network like this.

535 users connected - these are houses with wifi kit connecting to PTAWUG, there are more persons than 535 that use the wug. 51 standard kits sold in August on the PTAWUG accounts at miro.co.za and scoop.co.za. We have a few new admins that volunteerd to help out with routing and ip assignments. Lots of highsites in planning mode and donations coming in at a steady pace : http://www.ptawug.co.za/content_list_29
The Rietvallei (PTAWUG) - Lafarge (Jawug) link was also installed increasing the bandwith between the wugs.

PTAWUG 600 users

PTAWUG has reached 600 users connected - that's 600 houses/buildings that connect to PTAWUG, many more than 600 persons use the wug.
Thanks to all wuggers and other organisations that helped to put up highsites, donated, improve and maintain the network.

Growth graph: http://www.photosite.co.za/uploads/899Wug_growth_oct09.JPG

Standard PTAWUG kit is still cheap from miro and scoop - R1850 incl for the full kit - see ptawug.co.za for more info.

We are also experimenting with 802.11n links, going to put up a link between Irene and Hornbill highsites using dual feed dishes.

We will have a wugmeet in November - the last one for the year, date and venue to follow.:D

We just keep expanding! If you haven't joined yet, you really need to consider it. Still my best IT/Tech investment in the last 2 years!

protzkrog,

Do you have a graph showing total users/ avg latency/ avg throughput? Average it over let's say 8 or so backbone links.

It would be interesting to see how they are related. I am sure you guys are pushing TB's per month by now.

Nice job thus far

Please join us on IRC and ask away, but please remember that you might not be helped immediately, but stay in the IRC channel and you will be helped eventually. Don't be afraid to leave PMs (private messages) to all the admins. One of them will respond, as long as you keep your IRC open.

This is a problem we experience at times, because new users come on IRC during business hours and ask their questions, but then leave after half an hour or two. The problem though is that almost all the admins are at work and do not unfortunately have time during the day to attend to the requests. So leave a PM and if you leave the IRC channel, maybe leave an email address as well or state that you will be on IRC again later that evening between certain hours. Because if you leave without leaving any further contact info, the admin had no way of contacting you and he/she is not going to wait on IRC for you to return.

It is your responsibility to make sure you get helped. State your questions clearly and concisely and you will be helped. Read through the our site and learn what you need to know and then come ask any other questions you might have. PTAWUG is not in the habit to go out and piss people off, but by the same token, we are also not here to spoon feed everything to you.
